Hi.

Now, the game against Rodent, taking the h8 rook.
A win for me.

I do not think I played particularly well, and at some points I barely kept the advantage.
I got two scares.
After 24. Be5 (I missed this move), I have three pieces in the same diagonal, Rodent is threatening to pin my Queen with Bd6, and my black squared bishop was unable to cover the d6 square. I had to move my king, and lose a pawn.
The second scare was after 35. Rd5 (of course, I missed this one too). Rodent is threatening Re5 (winning a pawn and the queen for its rook) and either Rb5 or Bb5, winning my bishop. I actually thought that I had to part with my bishop. Fortunately I saw 35... Bc4 36. Re5 Be6.
I played better in the ending, and used my queen to win pawns.
When I played 50... Qe2, I was not completely sure that the pawn ending was won, in case Rodent took my queen (I was almost sure that I could win with an extra pawn and a very active king). Rodent refused to win my queen for its rook, so I assume it evaluated the pawn ending as lost for itself.
But with 55. Rf3 it allowed me to convert to a very easily winning pawn ending.

I am beginning a new odds challenge against engines: queen vs rook.
I will be playing Black.
From the initial position, the white queen is removed.
Also, a black rook is removed.

Time control: 15 minutes initial time, plus 10 seconds increment for every move.
All engines with ponder on.
Other than that, default settings.

The opponents: Berserk, Komodo, Lc0, Rodent and Stockfish.

The first game is just finished.
Against Berserk, taking the a8 rook.
A loss for me.

I think I just played badly in all phases of the game.
Even the ending (a knight up for a pawn) should have been a relatively easy win.
I hope to perform better in the next games.

I do not understand why the game began on move 2.
I checked while setting the game up, and the fen clearly showed the game beginning on move 1.

The next game is against Komodo, taking the h8 rook.
Greetings.

Post by pepechuy »

Hi.

Now, the game against Stockfish, taking the a8 rook.
A win for me.

I barely managed to win this game, since I played a lot of imprecise moves in the ending.
My first big choice was after 16. c4; I considered both Nef6 and Qa5. I went for 16... Qa5 in order to win White's queenside pawns. I realized that Stockfish would get a central passed pawn, but I was confident I would be able to block it.
After 19. Rb1, I seriously considered 19... Qb1 20. Rb1 Nd6; reaching a rook+knight ending, two healthy pawns up. I know it should be easily winning, but I did not trust my techique 100%. Also, I was looking to win White's d-pawn without having to give back my queen for a rook.
After 22. Ne5 I went for an ending two pawns up, but in much better conditions for me (next paragraph). But mostly, I chose 22... Nd7 because I saw no simple way to win the d-pawn, which was already on the seventh rank (a real danger).
After 25... Kf8 (I calculated up to this move when I played 22... Nd7), I am up two pawns in a rook ending (no knights). My rook on d7 is excellently placed: it cuts off the White king from the queenside (most important), and it defends my kingside pawns. The position is an easy win: I maneuver my king with Kf8-e7-d8-c7, and then begin to advance my a- and b-pawns. The White rook has no chance against my King and two pawns, and its King can not come over to help.
But then I began to make poor moves. 26... a5 is simply inexplicable. I just lose a pawn (I only considered that Stockfish could attack it from the a-file, and missed that it can attack the pawn from the fifth rank, which it did on move 29). I lost a pawn. It transformed a trivial win into a technical win. Fortunately, White's king is still cut off from the Queenside.
I think 41... Kc2 is also not very good. 41... Rf4 (capturing a pawn) must be better. But 41... Kc2 also had its point: it keeps the White king away from my passed pawn.
After 46... Kb1, I was not completely sure that I would win the Rook vs Pawns ending; but from Stockfish' evaluation it is already seeing a mate two moves later!
51. g6 just gives up.

I decided to give it a try since it is a reasonable challenge to replace the Queen for a Rook. Next Game against the Free version of Komodo 14.1 contempt = 130 to see if I can beat it this time
Note: I can see myself in big trouble at the moment, I do Not know if I wll last another 30 moves

Hi.

Now, the first game against Berserk, taking the h8 rook.
A loss for me.

I was playing reasonably well until move 25. Not great, but well enough to keep my advantage.
But then I blundered a knight with 26... Nc6
And the next move I blundered the queen with 27... Qe5
I had over 7 minutes on the clock, so it was not a time trouble issue. Just a very bad move that definitely does not correspond to my playing strength. I hope to avoid this kind of blunders in the next games.
I wanted to resign, but I have not found a way to do it in Banksia.

Hi.

It is unlikely that I will play any of those challenges.
If I had not job and no family, I would play all the challenges.
But I do have a job and a family. There is simply not enough time.

Greetings.
