Re: The Baron 3.45
If I'm not mistaken, with 3.44.1 it used to run as UCI playing FRC under ChessGUI, but with the 960_OO setting rather than the 960_HAha setting that most other UCI engines use. It probably requires a GUI that supports the older FRC castling standard that existed with Arena before the Shredder GUI "standard" came in. Possibly WB may work as Gabor says.

I am happy to fix it, but you have to give me a little more info. You can turn on the Baron's log by going into the baron.ini file and find the line where it says 'logging off'. Change that into 'logging on' and you will see a logfile with all engine/gui communication and a few other things. If you could send that logfile to me along with any other info you may have on this (thebaron@telenet.be) then I'll take a look at it.

It would not be the only engine that does not work well as UCI but is OK as Winboard under Cute Chess. I have found Pepito and Queen behaves so and there may be more.

I was too late for this week's update but it's going to appear in the next one.

Re: The Baron 3.45
Thanks to the files you've sent me I was able to reproduce the error.Modern Times wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 4:37 pm If I'm not mistaken, with 3.44.1 it used to run as UCI playing FRC under ChessGUI, but with the 960_OO setting rather than the 960_HAha setting that most other UCI engines use. And more importantly: Fix it.
In the end it was a simple copy/paste error. The released version handles A-side castling correctly, but doesn't handle H-side castling due to this error.
So as you suspected if the GUI uses o-o for castling H-side the Baron 3.45 should be able to play FRC/Chess960 games correctly.
I'll produce the Baron 3.45.1 today which has only this problem fixed, there will be no other changes. So if you're not playing FRC/Chess960 games it is not needed to download the Baron again.
