The computer played axb5. Back in those days, none of the PC programs could find it. I bet that lots of them can find it now.
Hi Dann,
This famous position has been discussed a lot, and I think the consensus these days is that Qb6 is stronger than axb5. axb5 doesn't win against best defense (Kasparov resigned in a drawn position!), while Qb6 very likely might win by force.
I wonder if someone with one of those monster boxes and SMP Rybka cold give it a pounding for a full weekend. I would be keenly interested to see the outcome.
I am giving a bunch of strong programs a one hour each look tonight, but there are machines that can probably duplicate the quality of that analysis in 15 minutes or less.

Of course, Rybka. Take a look at the latest Christiansen vs Rybka match and you will be amazed with its positional squeezing style. Remember, Fruit is also a positional and technical program but then it turns really tactical whenever it sees an opening. At least, that's how I see.

The brandnew Toga 3.1.2 Checkov 1f with a minimal margin just has switched from Qb6 to axb5 on my machine, but it is not a deep enough analysis I suppose. My hardware is not competitive with Duals and Quads for that, a really deep analysis if it has not been done already would be nice, but is it not already in the archives somewhere?

Toga stays with axb5 through ply 23. But according to Vas Qb6 is really the best move here:

http://rybkaforum.net/cgi-bin/rybkaforu ... e#pid17184

Deep analysis by Rybka there in that thread goes to +0.88 at 26 ply, analysis by Steinar's Rybka 2.3.2a, with 2 cores but the 32-bit version. So the difference is not very big with axb5 and does not show a winning score at this depth.
FWIW, after 26 ply it still prefers Qb6, although the margin is small:

PV 1 (+0.88) (2349202 kn, 89 kn/s, 26 ply):
Qb6, Qe7, axb5, Rab8, Qxa6, e4, Qa7, Qe5, Qe3, Bc7, Qxe4, Qxc3, d6, Bb6+

PV 2 (+0.71) (2596732 kn, 87 kn/s, 26 ply):
axb5, axb5, Be4, Qd8, Kh2, Rxa2, Qxa2, Rb8, Qa7, Rb6, Kg3, Bb8, Qa5, Kf7

PV 3 (+0.36) (2996342 kn, 83 kn/s, 26 ply):
Qe1, a5, bxa5, Rxa5, axb5, Rxa2, Rxa2, Qxb5, Be4, Qb6+, Kh2, Bc5, Qd2, Be3

I guess neither are bad moves in the end.

I thought I vaguely remembered that Fritz also played axb5 at the time but I can be totally wrong about that, it could have been about finding Be4 and Dann says that none of the PC programs played axb5 at the time of the match.

Hey Check this coplue of games, like this there are many, only you must spend time to fin them, CCRL and CEGT have many games like this, Rybka often play this kind of sacrifices, Junior, and Fritz.

Hi Robin,

Dadi Jonsson has posted three more examples in the Rybka forum thread that I already gave a link to.
Not sure whether they'll meet your criteria or not because I've not had a chance to scrutinise them.

Regards, Graham.

Hi Graham,
I just looked at the three examples provided by Jonsson. Yes, those meet the criteria I was talking about. When it comes to computer chess one should never say never, since things keep changing.

Computers are good but still they don't know chess or at least they don't play top quality positional chess like humans do. Computers are short-range "thinkers" while humans are excellent at long-range thinking. Humans are excellent pattern recognizers while computers are not. Humans are much better at positional (or strategical) chess while computers are much better at tactical chess.

Wasn't it said that after Rybka, this is no longer true?
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.
