I think that the fact that Thinker 5.1c doesn't display either thinking lines or thinking depth might be deterring some from using it.
That is a bit sad but I must agree with this. If I could see the thinking lines of Thinker, I would certainly herald (!) his performance much more than I do now. Its entreprising style is of high value for any correspondence player with attacking games to go (for analysis), and for epd-testing like I use to do.

I did try everything I could to make Thinker 5.1C show something more than 3/5-halves moves: using Thinkerboard, using Inbetween, using the old Chessbase adapotor (in win 98 compatibility mode even!) to try to get something more out of it. I'm no expert but my efforts were vains.

If Mr. Perkins happens to read this: please make your wonderful engine display a bit a more information!

I doubt that he reads this forum very often, may be one of us should send him a request, and notify the forum once they have done so.

I send him an email
Hey,
I dont know if you have read the CCC lately but many people are holding off from testing thinker due to one problem. For them thinker doesnt show continuous thinking lines. For me Thinker shows the PV right after it has made a move, which means that the move wont be shown in the pgn. I do not care about seeing all the thinking lines as I am not a correspondence player of any sort. It would be highly appreciated if you can do something about it.

Thanks
Tony Thomas
Hopefully he will fix it for you guys in Thinker 5.2 that's another 100 points stronger.

Yes Thinker is strong as my first test against bright shows:

Code: Select all

1 Thinker 0101½1½11½11101½½½1½ 13.5/20
2 Bright 1010½0½00½00010½½½0½ 6.5/20

But even if it were stronger than Rybka I will NOT re-install it before it shows analysis line! Additionally now You are forced to play until mate, because no evaluation is stored :(

I have got some update

Post by Tony Thomas »

Hi Tony,

I have frozen the desktop engine source code at the moment.

I am busy concentrating on updating the pocket pc version. It has a lot of serious issues that need to be addressed. In the mean time, a lot of users have been asking for an update for a long time now. You may not know this, but the pocket pc thinkerboard is currently the only "usable" program for connecting to ICS/FICS using a pda.

There is always rybka and shredder to entertain most users, and thinker is nowhere near their league. But at the moment, there is only thinkerboard for ics/fics pda users. And, I only do these things on my spare time.

Once I have released the next update to the pocket pc thinker/thinkerboard, I will get back to the desktop thinker engine. However, I can't promise you that it will happen soon.

Take care...

I can't install Thinker into Fritz 11 or Chessbase. Is that normal? I'm eager to see this agressive engine.

EDIT: ok I realized its a WB engine. Is there a proposed eng file for this wb engine for wb to uci adaptor? I've never done it before and I'm not accustomed to arena yet. Perhaps I should just figure out Arena :s

Arena is one of the easiest interfaces to use. You dont have to be a computer geek to use Arena. It does have its draw backs, but the advantages do over shadow all the bugs. Arena is the only inteface that I use currently for eng vs eng matches and hopefully it will continue to improve.

agreed, Tony. Sad thing is that Martin doesn't find time to work on Arena nowadays and we are getting a beta per year...unlike in the past, ie in the period of Arena 0.90 - 1.00 where there were several betas in Arena security area, I guess with the ratio of 2 betas a month were made available for download for the members of Arena Security Area..
