@ Marc: Yes, learning is enabled. It might help HIARCS a bit since I'm using a fixed openings test set compared to a neutral opening book, but I'm not sure how much. Since you've asked, I'm really curious now. I'd like to duplicate this set of matches with HIARCS - learning disabled.

@ George: PM me with your e-mail address, and I'll WinRar it and send it to you.

I'm glad that you are testing with learning ON, as it gets to show the true potential of the engine. As for reproducibility, you could just share the learn file so everyone can have the 2765 rated HIARCS from your tourney.

I agree about using the learning file. It is a natural part of the program that Mark developed, so why shouldn't it be turned "On"? That would be like turning off some of the other neat features other engine authors have incorporated into their creations.

The same engine accumulating learning on different computers at different rates playing other engines with little or no learning or learning also accumulated at different rates means that you're literally testing several modified versions that are unique to each other.

I think that turning the learning off for a program that has learning is kind of like trying to hook up a Corvette using a Honda Civic engine. Even if you manage to run it at the same speed, you are still a retard...I guess few people are happy to see the same engine making the same mistake all the time.

Learning is a great feature, but not when you're creating a rating list due to the reasons I specified.

My only point is that Hiarcs with learning on in your rating list will have a rating that can't be compared to Hiarcs in other rating lists because of the reasons I mentioned.

Learning is a great feature if you're building up an engine's strength to play in a tournament.

If another rating list doesnt want to run an engine at its full strength that's their problem, not mine.

You're missing the point entirely, but you're correct in that people are free to do what they wish.
