I know a lot of people who tends to romanticize a lot the idea of free and open souce software. Everything is colorful and beatiful, but when it came their own interests being affected by using open source, suddenly they completely change their minds. Fabien Letouzey who is in my view the most influential person regarding open source chess engines, even he tried closing Fruit sources when he realized the possibility of making money with it....

Hello Ben-Hur,

I really understand how the timing of the two events could be interpreted this way. Yes Fruit went commercial and yes the sources were closed.

The possibility of making money had nothing to do with that decision.

For more I guess you would have to talk with Fabien but I was there at the time. In fact I may be roasted for this but I had argued that the Fruit sources should have remained closed from minute one but Fabien is an incredible human being.

I am ill-equipped technically assess genius but I would truly say that Fabien was one.

Later.
Hello Roger.

Even if Fabien had closed Fruit sources to go commercial, I see nothing wrong with it. Even then he would still remain as a nice and smart guy. That's my point.
