From what you've said in the past Larry, I get the impression that you're able to improve the SP version quite a bit without Don's help. Is that right?

Secondly, very sorry to hear Don isn't that well. I don't mean this to sound heartless, but do you think Komodo has a long term future?

I am able to improve the SP version myself as long as it doesn't require sophisticated programming, but Don has also been able to make improvements even when he's not well enough to work on MP, because a program change takes just a few minutes (sometimes), while MP will require many hours of hard work. But Don is feeling well enough now, and is back to working on MP.

If "long term future" means 10 years, we may have a problem, but I think Don will be able to work productively (but not full-time) on Komodo for the next 3 years or more. As for myself, my only real problem is my age, but so far my chess results have not deteriorated much so presumably neither have my abilities to work on chess programs.

Thank you Deeb, I appreciate the kind words.

I have recently been working on it again and made some major breakthroughs - I'm still amazed at the layers of bugs but I'm much more optimistic now. I am reluctant to make any promises but it's coming along well. A few days ago I had a version that basically worked but not in a state that could be released as I was getting only a little parallelism out of it do to a bug with how I abort work when there is a cutoff.

Great to hear you're back on the saddle Don. It must have been rewarding to get a breakthrough after all the work.

One question: It sounds (reading between the lines) that you enjoy working on the SP version more than the MP one. Are you keen to stick at MP work? I tend to find I do much better at things I enjoy.

The MP work is basically a one-time thing. Once it's done, all future versions of SP will be automatically also be available as MP. Of course it's always possible to improve MP without working on SP, but any gains from this should be pretty small on normal hardware.

Ah OK, that explains a lot. I was imagining years of torment for you two as you have to endure this MP affliction for evermore!
