The downside though is that the Debian stable branch updates very slowly and is often missing recent applications and current versions of software.
You won't have that issue with Debian 7 because it just came out. But it was quite an issue with the prior version.

Wireless firmware
I was pleasantly surprised with getting a third wireless NIC running in Debian 7. This one was an Asus PCI card which was tamed with the Debian firmware-ralink package. Doing this was easy, but only because I already know how to identify the NIC chipset and how to access the "unfree" repository.
Next: a fourth NIC, this one a USB stick.
