Yes, but that's not the point. I posted this position and SF's analysis to refute your post about how to recognize draws using a search. My point is that there are no easy, cute rules. If you want an engine to evaluate correctly, you're going to have to do some work.

Thats is why my original suggestion was to use the search approach only in late endgame, with npm less than 1/4 of tnpm, when engine search is much more difficult to fail. I tihkn altogether impossible.
Middlegame fortress positions are simply too complex to assess in this way, at least for the time being.

Can you post an eg fortress position with tnpm less than 1/4 which engines would think is a draw, but actually is not?

OK, you might say, when all pawns blocked
- and there are only rooks, draw; but what about the case when pawns are blocked not in a single chain, but in 2 or 3 chains of pawns instead? then this rule would not hold
- when there is bishop the colour of the pawn chain, again draw, but what again if there is not a single pawn chain?
- knights are no good to recognise such fortresses, ok, as they jump over pawns, and btw., this is the reason why knight value is larger in blocked positions
- when you have a queen, and a single pawn chain, there is no simple rule, you should do a complex SEE to see where the queen can be sacrificed successfully; but wht is the guarantee this approach will succeed, when it fails even in normal much less complex positions?

etc., etc.

And that is only a single type of fortress with all pawns blocked, which is relatively rare; there might be piece blockades, night blockades, rook blockades, bishop blockades, queen blockades and king blockades. How do you recognise all of those with an eval approach?

And then, there might be many blockades with backward-fated/doubly backward pawns, which are a thing apart and for them you need separate rules. How you going to recognize all those, when they are even trickier than the first category?

And then, blockades with all pawns blocked are just a very tiny portion of all available blockades and fortresses. SO how are going to come up with sufficient eval rules for all of them?

If that is impossible and the search approach does not work, that simply means engines will never be able to recognize blockades.

Correct, not only it is not a draw, but also SF will certainly win it. After some moves of shuffling, the search will sooner or later hit the 50 move mark and SF will choose the right path.

SF had an idea like this (but much more elaborated) for a long time. But it is just cosmetics, since a rule to deal with this has to be hit at the tip of the tree, not in the root. I think it was removed, and it is very dangerous. There were many posts about this in the past.

Just did that. My position is just as "normal" as the totally locked position you posted. The score is huge, over 17 full pawns. The score rises by only 1/2 pawn in 90 plies. And yet it's not a draw.

So, when you see that a 17 full pawns score does not increase with more than a pawn for the next 4 plies, or even 2-3 plies, that is a certain draw.

As mentioned, my original suggestion, with the valuable help of Daniel to sort out things, was to apply such a rule only in the late eg, when non pawn material less than 1/4 of tnpm.
In such a case, it is very difficult or altogether impossible for a top engine search to fail.

Yes, that's the question. And it's probably not so easy to do. But since humans can quickly discern which is a win and which is a draw, some sort of "rule" or "pattern" must be visible to us.

As said, with good eval and search, scores below 50cps in the mg may not increase, scores bigger than 50cps tend to only increase, but slowly.

The larger the score, the faster the advantage wshould increase with depth. Scores larger than 3-4 full pawns tend to increase rapidly, and a score larger than 10 full pawns, as in the present case, should increase extremely fast with every new iteration, maybe with at least 50cps at each subsequent ply.

So, when you see that a 17 full pawns score does not increase with more than a pawn for the next 4 plies, or even 2-3 plies, that is a certain draw.

So, in this case, you need to check just 3 plies deep.

If it is a similar position with only one pawn difference this method will fail (won't apply). So only fifty moves rule can help us. I just have to wait for another thousand years before Skipper has the right hardware to solve these problems.

Lyudmil's position is a very ugly one as for engine's search and evals, cause not only are the engines clueless about the draw, they are even going to lose this now and then by giving up the covering of one of the Pawns with the Knights.

E.g. after 1.Qe1 (3.Qe1, does anybody have an idea why this starts with move nr.3? ) SF tends to play ...Nb8?? and that means already game over.
