I have Windows 98SE running inside VirtualBox on a 3Ghz Athlon II X2 250 Dual core computer running linux.
I have installed Rebel 12 version 12.00.02 from January 2004.
I remember it being the strongest of the several chess engines I was using around that time.
The bench command seems to be absent, just a message saying the ELO is 3230.
Using a hash setting of 60MB and 10 seconds per move I get about 120K to 140K nps around move 15 a few moves after leaving the opening book.
Its a pity that Ed removed the auto232 function to enable it to play against other engines on another computer with an RS232 cable. Moves have to be made manually on each computer. I still do this occasionally.
I wish it had been converted to a uci engine as happened to Rebel Century 3 not long ago as Rebel 12 was the strongest of the Rebels before being replaced by ProDeo in 2005.
On one of my other computers I remember DosBox running Rebel 12 about 8 times slower than in Win98SE inside VirtualBox.
