Sorry for diigging up this old topic, but it's very interesting to me. Well, I have run a 200 games match on my i5 between Fritz 9 and Dragon 2 skill 24 at 2m+1s and score is about even (one digit Elo plus for Fritz). From what I read on this forum, it is safe to assume that Dragon 2 skill 24 is not weaker than 2650 Elo Classical. Now let's suppose that Fritz 9 is 200 ELo stronger than Fritz 5.32. 200 Elo is worth no more than 4 doublings of time. So, Fritz 5.32 would need a time control of something like 10m+2s to get to 2650 Elo. It means that at the standard time control (120m+30s) it has to be over 2800 on a mediocre hardware such is i5. Am I missing something here?Vinvin wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 3:34 amI agree with you.Gary Internet wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 12:55 pm This discussion on how strong is the latest software when it is made to run on the oldest/weakest/slowest/worst hardware that it's capable of running on is far more interesting than how the latest software performs when it's running on hardware that costs at least as much as a decent second hand car.
It would be a great fun to watch SF running at 10 Kn/s (or 1/100 time handicap on a phone) versus a 2700 human.
But I also would like to see star engines more than 20 year old on modern machine (full speed with VirtualBox) vs current IMs and GMs.
All that engines that made the Computer chess history around 1999 : Chess Tiger 12.0, Fritz 5.32, Hiarcs 7.32, Junior 5.0, Crafty 18, Chessmaster 6000, MChess Pro 8.0, Rebel 8.0, Virtual Chess and even Chess Genius 3.
May be one day ...
what is the oldest hardware when engines at GM level?

And one more question: which interface allows to set the time per move to less than 1s/move? I'm asking this because every engine I have, including aforementioned Fritz 5.32 and older versions of Crafty, is much stronger than me even at one second per move. Fritz 5.32 even reaches 9-10 ply in one second, which is ridiculously strong for me. Thanks.

Is there any way to manually limit Stockfish's nodes per second or to compile one with a limit?
