OK.
So on MacOS you run Banksia - that should work fine.
But on Windows running in Parallels you can only use 8 of your 10 cores. That would annoy me. I imagine Parallels will fix this in the next release.

OK.
You could use 8 performance cores for chess and 2 efficiency cores for macOS, Safari browser, games…Werewolf wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 7:26 pmOK.

You can't use the CPU fully, for chess, and even if you could performance of Apple is sub-par compared to similar priced modern alternatives, which also come with great GPU options, exetranlGPUs, etc for GPU-bound chess engines as a bonus.
It's the same for any set-up. ex: a 16 core Zen 5950x...you might have 16 cores/32 threads...but realistically most people using this for chess are going to want a core or 2 with which to do other things...else you have an expensive 'one trick pony'.wickedpotus wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 6:03 pmYou can't use the CPU fully, for chess, and even if you could performance of Apple is sub-par compared to similar priced modern alternatives, which also come with great GPU options, exetranlGPUs, etc for GPU-bound chess engines as a bonus.
Nightmare for M1 Ultra users though. 20 physical cores, 8 of which would be useable for WindowsCornfedForever wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 8:29 pmIt's the same for any set-up. ex: a 16 core Zen 5950x...you might have 16 cores/32 threads...but realistically most people using this for chess are going to want a core or 2 with which to do other things...else you have an expensive 'one trick pony'.wickedpotus wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 6:03 pmYou can't use the CPU fully, for chess, and even if you could performance of Apple is sub-par compared to similar priced modern alternatives, which also come with great GPU options, exetranlGPUs, etc for GPU-bound chess engines as a bonus.
The difference is that those users are in control of their options, not the f*ing vendor of the hw...CornfedForever wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 8:29 pm It's the same for any set-up. ex: a 16 core Zen 5950x...you might have 16 cores/32 threads...but realistically most people using this for chess are going to want a core or 2 with which to do other things...else you have an expensive 'one trick pony'.
In general, AMD's Ryzen 7000-series 'Raphael' processors look quite promising, especially if AMD can clock production six-core CPUs at 4.40 GHz. But let's wait for Zen 4-based production units and appropriate review at Tom's Hardware to verify our feelings.
Perhaps you prefer those old 'space heaters' or 'floor heaters'. Get with the times, old man - Automatic Heat and Air is the way to go!wickedpotus wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 11:01 pmThe difference is that those users are in control of their options, not the f*ing vendor of the hw...C ornfedForever wrote: ↑Sat Jul 16, 2022 8:29 pm It's the same for any set-up. ex: a 16 core Zen 5950x...you might have 16 cores/32 threads...but realistically most people using this for chess are going to want a core or 2 with which to do other things...else you have an expensive 'one trick pony'.![]()
I prefer good cooling solutions and high performing chess & gaming machines.. crybabies with overpriced, underperforming, poser-hw that don't know much about anything, are not my bag.. But i guess "stupid" is in fashion currentlyCornfedForever wrote: ↑Sun Jul 17, 2022 4:39 am Perhaps you prefer those old 'space heaters' or 'floor heaters'. I would argue that an 'arrogant tunnelvision' and disparaging others behind the faceless wall of the internet' is and has been the overriding "fashion" for some time...and only seems to be getting worse. But perhaps they are the same....wickedpotus wrote: ↑Sun Jul 17, 2022 1:58 pmI prefer good cooling solutions and high performing chess & gaming machines.. crybabies with overpriced, underperforming, poser-hw that don't know much about anything, are not my bag..
