ok guys
two hours to go until the time control(as i write)
as i read it ...it is a tie for a5 and g6..with Zach offering to change his vote to a5 if needed to break the tie
Ray can of course decide to offer a move
personally i wish he would stay in the game because he was a driving force in having this game played out in the first place
would be a shame to lose his participation
will check back tomorrow morning
Best Regards
Steve

Re: Move 16
True, I didn't see Rfd1, which doesn't look too good for black after Be7 Bc4+ Kh8 Be3. Which would also make Bf6 a waste of a move.tano-urayoan wrote:I like your idea but maybe play first d6 to discourage this Bc5 move that seems to give us problems.Zach Wegner wrote: If nobody else votes for e5 though I will go with a5.

Re: How to beat the TASC R30 (1993)
I don't think that Sam's 18.b4 is necessarily the best move in that line. I'm more concerned about 18.Bc5 followed by a3 and Bb4. It then seems to me that White will be able to activate his rooks and put pressure on our kingside.Christopher Conkie wrote:OK for who? Us? Yes it is because we then play Qe7. If then b4 we play Ra4!Graham Banks wrote:17.....a4; 18.b4, ab; 19.ab is okay Tano-Urayoan.tano-urayoan wrote:Sam if 17...a4 18 b4 runs into 18...axb4 e.p. If Chris and folks can find a way to get ....a5, ....a4 to work without some preliminary work I am all for it. I couldn't find it.15...a5 16. Bd3 g6 17. Qg4 and I am not sure what to do for black here. 17...a4 is met with 18 b4, but I don't see much better.

Move 15
Seems the move is 15..a5 with Zach breaking the tieZach Wegner wrote:True, I didn't see Rfd1, which doesn't look too good for black after Be7 Bc4+ Kh8 Be3. from here on in the current FEN and PGN will be updated in the initial post of this thread
before i logged off last night(9pm my time) i assumed the move would be a5 so the R30 has been pondering that move since then
as this particular position has generated so much interest i will let the R30 go the full 24 hours from 9PM last night which means i will post the move by 9PM tonight(about 21 hours from when i write)
if the move was not 15..a5 just let me know and i will change it to 15..g6(if that is the move) and let it ponder from there

Re: Move 15
Seems like the strategy is working, guys. Act like we are really debating and can't make up our minds, then Steve runs the computer all night, it overheats and dies. Not only do we win the game, but Steve also loses a very expensive dedicated computer. This one's in the bag!

hopefully you and the other "human" players will stay with this game to the end
it has been suggested that to defeat the R30 one only has to use an engine(s)
thats fairly obvious i guess
after all if players are going to use their Rybkas on multi-core computers.. i think the R30 would lose even with Knight odds
personally i dont see why "engine only" players would even be interested in playing in this game and defeating the R30 which is rated 600-700 points lower then the top engines of today..but that could just be me
from what i can tell it doesn't seem that many players are just using their engines.. but certainly everyone is welcome to play ..with or without engines
interestingly ..the R30 has a slightly stronger rating against humans players..then against other dedicated computers(about 25 Elo higher)
2300+ Elo Regards
Steve

Regarding the overheating thingyZach Wegner wrote: Steve runs the computer all night, it overheats and dies.
the very Rare R40( not R30) actually had cooling fans built onto the mother board and the back of the unit was modified to allow for cooling vents:
