we played Chess Genius at the championship in paderborn 1995:

Code: Select all

[Event "World Computer Chess"]

ossi weiner was very convinced that genius would win the game.
chris and i knew that CSTAL would win. we tested almost all kind of openings before the game and the version we used was very succesful against genius. it was a genius killer.
we showed ossi weiner the games before the game. he grinned and said:
ok - i will NOT choose the openings shown in those autoplayer-games.
he let genius play a closed passive opening.
it did not help. genius did not know that one should not exchange an unimportant knight against an important bishop.
EXCHANGES were always Genius' problem because it worked only with a static exchange evaluator that could not use much knowledge about the situation on board.

when it happened
chris and i looked at each other because we knew instantly that this will be a fatale mistake. ossi weiner supported richard and said: its not a problem. this is only a law in MANY games, but not in any. it will have no relevance in THIS game.

of course this was wishful thinking. as a strong chess player he should have known better.

When should we expect a major breakthrough in science ?
When will a lone developer 'step through the looking-glass' ?
Who will this developer be ?

The answer to the above two questions is of course whenever the old, classical programmers say 'we've reached perfection, there is no way to improve'; when the old paradigm says 'there is only one way'; when all the developers produce roughly equal results.

To play chess without knowledge of chess is not to play chess

Here is an example of an easy draw :
White : me
Black : Cstal 2
Time : matching time

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. d3 h6 6. O-O O-O 7. Re1 Ng4 8. Rf1 Nf6 9. Re1 Ng4 10. Rf1 Nf6 draw.
At move 9, Cstal displays in the legal moves windows Ng4 "Draw Attack".
