I agree. I've done this once in the past, in fact. There are a few sanity issues. I'd feel uncomfortable with someone associated with a commercial engine being a moderator. A conflict-of-interest would be the expected result, and that can't be good for a forum which is free, when compared to a commercial product that makes money.

That's why the democracy on CCC is in danger.
Well, CCC will simply be renamed to BCS then:
Banks-Conkie-Skinner-Forum
Not sure what you are implying about Peter. I've known him for years, have not seen any extreme views from him at all.
Maybe now that you are not running for a mod, he has decided to show his true colours ?

But it would then flap its arms around in a very dangerous way :) Until it realised that Dr. Smith was really the bad guy ;-)

I may be part of a commercial project but I receive no financial reward for it I am a Computer Chess supporter first and foremost. I would also be happy when there is a perceived conflict of interest to hand any decision making over to the other 2 mods if this was deemed necessary.

Bob, so far only Jeremy is running for the evidence-before-condemnation camp.
Will you run with him ? Otherwise the CCC may change for worse.

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

Peter has probably been a mod here almost as many times as Bob.

I think the Ippo* discussion has been a bit excessive, both in volume and sometimes in heat, but I expect it will die down a bit as these engines cease to be novel.

Personally I do believe these various engines are unauthorized derivatives of a commercial program. I don't support the actions of their authors. I don't think they should be allowed in an official tournament.

But - they exist; they are readily findable and available, with or without this forum's aid. Furthermore the algorithms used in them can be considered revealed. There is no putting them back. So pretending they don't exist does not seem to me a reasonable option for this forum (I can understand why the Rybka forum may choose to do this, though).

Moderators can and should control flame wars, personal insults, off-topic discussion etc., although there are going to be times people will disagree on what is reasonable.
