New version of Francesca released - v0.14

There may be enough information in the above posted Winboard debug file but I'll post his too.

I ran the "InBetween" utility with the mad.exe versions 0.14 and 0.13 and Winboard. Below are the Inbetween log files. I think the ? at the end of the 0.14 log is when I clicked 'move now' trying to get the engine to make a move.

thanks, Charles. Just how old is the laptop? I wonder if the compiled version (MSVC2010) with various flags just won't work on the processor you've got. Just a thought..

Can you go to the command line/ DOS box, and just verify that you can run mad.exe (outside Winboard).

The laptop is old - Pentium III 647MHz. It has functioned well as a standby unit since my regular PC's monitor bit the dust some time back. Ironically XP (Home) runs quite well on it.

Can you go to the command line/ DOS box, and just verify that you can run mad.exe (outside Winboard).

This is as far as I get on the command line. After the 'welcome' sentence I am unable to type in any moves and have them appear in the console. The OS eventually throws up the error message posted previously and everything slows to a crawl and need to reboot.

strange - perhaps it's the compiler flags? I do use the /arch:SSE2 flag for VC2010, so that's probably it. Don't think that P3 supported SSE2?

I will compile a version without the SSE2 flag for you, to see if that works

I did a quick search and SSE2 began with Pentium 4.


If you decide to compile a version of the latest Francesca to work with Pentium 3 processors, do not do it specifically for me.

My guess would be there are probably still some other Pentium 3 chess engine users around though.


Not a priority with me, I just wanted to relate what I had encountered. I'm content to use 0.13 when using Francesca.
