I don't agree with that analysis at all. I knew IM Mike Valvo quite well. And I watched him play hundreds of games against humans and computers. And his "style" of play was significantly different from what I saw from other IM players like IM Danny Kopec, to name just one. I saw this same thing many times on ICC. There are lots of IMs there that I know well, and they all have their own unique style of play.

This is a worn out discussion several months old which I had with Miguel, strange you missed it. Yes, there is a correlation with the strength, there is also a correlation of self-similarity and even plain similarity with the time control. Adam is using time control adjustments to compensate for strength differences, using the formula

Time = 10ms * 2^(Elo diff/100)

I have only two small objections:
1. 10ms for Houdini 1.5 seems to me too little. On Windows the standard C clock() function only has a resolution of 16ms.
2. 100 Elo points per doubling seems a little too much, maybe 70-80.

These things are pretty much irrelevant, the main thing is interpreting the results.

I agree, and I am also not sure what will happen when you test various engines against themselves. But I think that the experiment will be very valuable as a control. If we do not run the experiment, then we have no idea how an identical engine would perform. Without that information, I don't think we have any real idea what "these engines make similar moves" even means.

Self-similarity varies dramatically, if we compare to "ideal" 100%. In Houdini 1.5 it's 70-75% (depending on time control used, larger control - a little higher self-similarity). Fruit 2.1 maybe>95%, Spark very high too. And these are only 1-core results. Multicore is probably even less deterministic (lower self-similarity).

I just wanted to add to what Kai commented on.

First, I was worried about only giving 10ms per position to Houdini. However, the results are fairly consistent to what I have seen for more time per position. Though, self-similarity for Houdini 1.5 falls to ~70% at 10ms (I will upload the results in just a bit).

Second, I chose 100 Elo per doubling because I have not seen anything that 70 Elo is correct. From what I have read on CCC, it seems to differ for each engine. Also, there seems to be no data testing this between engines. Furthermore, I am trying to test many engines. For an engine that is 700 Elo weaker than Houdini 1.5, using 70 Elo means using 10.24 seconds per position, while 100 Elo means using 1.28 seconds per position. Finally, I don't really have a precise Elo rating for any engine. All of this is just a guesstimate. If the formula that I am using for allocating time per position for each engine is wrong for engines much weaker than Houdini, it will start showing in the data.

The main thing that makes what I am doing possible is that move selection seems to be fairly consistent for most engines. And, as been noted before in other contexts, engines do not seem to change their move selections alot. So, the comparison of move selections seems to be robust to the confounding factors that have been mentioned.

I can't really agree with your last statement, but I have the advantage of seeing much more data from sim testing than you have. If the majority of the engines chose the same moves at 42% to 52% in pairs but some pairs chose the same moves at 60% to 70% or more and there are enough pairs to make some normality assumptions, then we can start forming an idea about what "similarity in move selections" means. It in no way proves anything about the code for each engine, but it does give information regarding the characteristics of playing style.
