Hi Jean-Francois,

have a look in the game ...
After view games I saw two or three of such games.
With the result that your engine will be produce a very high move-average in games without resign-mode!
Should be repair!

Another way is ...
Games without syzygy?

But test-run can run for the next 20-22 hours, so I think you have many examples to optimated this and that.
Perhaps your engine lost also points if not the direct way to mate will be play.

Best
Frank

Hi Jean-Francois,

congratulation for your Gaia!
You produced the strongest available French engine ever.

But ...
The move-average for won games is very high, I think 20-30 moves higher as normaly.
Normaly ... I say often ... "the 3-Elo-draw-fighter" produced a high move-average. This group of engines will not give clearly draw games draw and hope of a mistake by the opponents. With the results that the move-average goes very high for max. 3 Elo (games without resign-mode). But that an engine will not search the direct way to mate is rarely. I have never seen it so clearly. And I have around 4 millions of games in my own eng-eng database.

You are the Gaia chef-inspector.
I wish me that you try to make a correction, because without that cosmetic flaw Gaia will be a jewel.

But after all ...
Gaia is really a sensation, your work after 20 years ...

Later this evening I will add the stats, so you can see that better.

For the moment ... last games are running ... Gaia is fighting for the title "Colonel".
With 72% = Colonel. I'm running out of Saber, a Colonel ... one rank higher is General with one *
I want to jump!

:-)

Best
Frank

So Gaia have two problems, the Virus detection and this one.
But no other technical problems, all runs here without any other problems.

Hi Jean-Francois,

Move-Average
Comparison with Zangdar and Reckless ... only for an example:

Code: Select all

                               points 1:0 1/2 0:1 % m-avg 1/0<50 rk
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
02. Reckless 260109 dev 1.057,0 814 486 0 81,31 73 43/ 0 + 43 04#
03. Gaia 4.1.3 937,5 619 637 44 72,12 97 18/ 1 + 17 06#
04. Zangdar 6.1 927,0 632 590 78 71,31 81 13/ 2 + 11 07#
On average, a Reckless game is finished 24 moves faster, and a Zangdar game 16 moves faster.
Note: All tested Engines have allways the same group of 26 "Standard-Engines" in my new testing.

In detail, here you can see the reason ...

Code: Select all

 7. Gaia 4.1.3 (619+, 637=, 44-) 72.1%

          CATEGORIES MOVE_AVE GAMES TOTAL GAME_RATE
           all games 97 1300
           white won 109 389
           black won 111 230
          white draw 85 248
          black draw 85 389
          white loss 82 13
          black loss 72 31
            all wins 110 619 1300 47.6%
           all draws 85 637 1300 49.0%
           all loses 75 44 1300 3.4%
Have a look on white won and black won.

Comparsion with Zangdar and Reckless ...

Zangdar 6.1.1

Code: Select all

27. Zangdar 6.1.1 (618+, 614=, 68-) 71.2%

          CATEGORIES MOVE_AVE GAMES TOTAL GAME_RATE
           all games 83 1300
           white won 83 356
           black won 87 262
          white draw 81 277
          black draw 77 337
          white loss 117 17
          black loss 86 51
            all wins 85 618 1300 47.5%
           all draws 79 614 1300 47.2%
           all loses 94 68 1300 5.2%
The average white-won for Zangdar = 26 moves faster
The average black-won for Zangdar = 24 moves faster

Reckless 260109 dev

Code: Select all

14. Reckless 260109 dev (814+, 486=, 0-) 81.3%

          CATEGORIES MOVE_AVE GAMES TOTAL GAME_RATE
           all games 73 1300
           white won 73 521
           black won 78 293
          white draw 69 129
          black draw 70 357
          white loss 0 0
          black loss 0 0
            all wins 75 814 1300 62.6%
           all draws 69 486 1300 37.4%
           all loses 0 0 1300 0.0%
The average white-won for Reckless = 36 moves faster ... hui ... a monster statistic, I wouldn't want to encounter Reckless on dark streets at night.
The average black-won for Reckless = 24 moves faster

With other words, something is wrong here.
Gaia don't like it to give mate ...
But better you can see in the games ...

Hi Frank,

Thank you so much for the thorough testing and the detailed statistics — this is incredibly valuable feedback.

You are absolutely right that something is wrong with the move average in won games. I believe the issue is related to Syzygy tablebase tie-breaking: when Gaia enters a winning endgame, it knows the position is won but doesn't prioritize the shortest path to mate. Instead of converging toward the mating sequence, it shuffles around in positions it considers equally winning. I agree this needs to be fixed — a won game should be converted cleanly.

I must say, reading "you produced the strongest available French engine ever" made my day. After coming back to chess programming 20 years later, this means a lot. Being the first one to reach this level feels like a real accomplishment.

Currently I'm in the middle of some deep structural changes to the search, but I will make sure the next release plays with more elegance in won positions. Gaia should finish what it starts!

Regarding the virus detection — I'm aware of it, it's a known false positive with Rust binaries. I'll look into signing or adjusting the build to help with that.

Best regards,
Jean-François

Thanks for your answere!
Good news!!

Eifelturm / means Eiffel Tower (shit English), Notre Dam, Charles de Gaulle, Fabien, Napoleon, FC Nantes ... The group of "Massy" programmers ... AnMon ... Gaia!
Your next Gaia version will go in the French history of computer chess with a great FanFare.

But you have a strong opponent ...
Zangdar ... fantastic piece of work too!

Perhaps other French programmers from the past will also become active again.
They would greatly enrich the scene.

Have a nice week!

Best
Frank
