17....g6 from me also.

And Taylor - I don't use computer aid, but I can't speak for others.

Since g6 is a nailed on certainty for our next move it may be wise to consider what comes next.

There are only 6 plausible replies to g6.

(1) 18. Bxg6

We have equalised at least in this forced line.

18. Bxg6 hxg6 19. Qxg6+ Bg7

(2) 18. Qh6

This move leads to a dead draw if we want it. The line starts.....

18. Qh6 Ra5

(3) 18. Qe2 & (4) 18. Qh3

These moves lead to the same thing via......

18. Qe2 Be5
18. Qh3 Qc7

(5) 18. Qc5

This allows us to follow our theme of a5 and a4......

18. Qc5 Ra5! =

(6) 18. Qg4

The most likely move from the R30.

18. Qg4 Qc7 19. Kh1 Rf7 (dark bishops come off in this line)

or

18. Qg4 Qc7 19. Be4 Ra5 (light bishops come off in this line)

In all lines we avoid swapping queens at least for the foreseeable future.

Christopher
18. Qh6 isn't Bg7 enough?
18. Qg4 Qc7 19. h4!?
18.Qe2 Be5 19. f4!? or 18. Qe2 Be5 19. Bh6 Bg7 forced move? 20.BxB KxB so the whole point in Be5 just exchanges our dark squared bishop.
18.Qe2 Qc7 maybe?

I usually don't, but I have checked my lines with ZCT on a few moves when I wasn't sure. I think this is more fun without computers--everyone running Rybka wouldn't be very interesting.

I havn't been over this 24 hours a day recently, and it's surprising to find this position!
The forum must have been playing without computer aid!

......g6 then the obvious idea of Bg6, is probably not that risky (of material deficit), even without calculating.
We do not need computer help if we can use our brains. If the machine plays Bxg6 it will lose, I guarantee that.

You may not need computer help here but if you play the Hiarcs Forum you will indeed need computer assistance. They're software junkies and have both top hardware and software.

So now you all know. Thanks Terry. That was very helpful.

They say they have correspondence champions......champs who use engines. ;-) Correspondence chumps more like.

It does not matter what they had software/hardware wise anyway. What we have is better. And that's a fact.

Getting back to the point......

I think most people can see that g6 is needed without any tools except their brain.

Yes, much more fun this way. The result doesn't matter, win or lose, without engines it is much more satisfying

They will beat you. If you take them for chumps they'll make you look like chimps!

However, I agree with g6. No need for a computer on this move and no, I doubt the comp will sac., it's a bad move. I expect Qg4.

Hello Mr McCracken:
The Hiarcs forum have uber hardware, uber software, uber opening books and databases but they also have an uber phobia against losing.
We just play for fun, win, lose or draw. I think if they lose a game, they will have a massive crisis in their forum.
