Next up will be another 272 games, but starting from the mirrored Embassy chess starting position. I'll probably have half a day or a day's break before starting those, to let me run some other stuff on the computer in between. After those games are finished, I will then cut down on the number of participants before running the rest of the starting positions.

Okay, games from the (mirrored) Embassy position have now started. First game to finish was another attempt by Arcbishop to castle, without Winboard understanding its format:

This is weird, as there are other games where ArcBishop seems to castle without problems (like ArcBishop-Bihasa 343, ArcBishop - Sjaak), although it doesn't get to castle that often.

You may drop Bihasa v3.2, there is really no need to run the 2 versions. This would save tournament time.

Interesting game between Nebiyu 1.44 and Bihasa 3.4.3, in which both think Bihasa has an advantage early on, but then it swings around and towards move 40, both think Nebiyu has an advantage... and then it swings again, and in the end, Bihasa wins:

After the Embassy Chess games finish, I am, as previously discussed, planning on cutting down the field in order to have fewer games for the remaining starting positions.

My preliminary suggestion, based on the results this far, would be to keep these 9 programs:

Bihasa 3.4.3
TJchess10x8 1.1-x64
NebiyuChess_1.44 (the newer one, even though the older one has performed marginally better)
Spartacus 1.02
Joker80.np
Sjaak 524
Smirf BC-173g-X
TSCPtest
Max-Plus 4.8S

I am planning on running from three more setups (the two previously declared, and the gothic setup), so that will give 216 more games total (compared with 272 games each for the first two setups).

Is there another program that I should include for the remainder of the tournament? (That would mean 270 more games total, which would still be fine with me.) Or does the above list look reasonable?

Re: Chess variant tournament: Capablanca and similar

Post by Daniel Shawul »

I have discovered a bug that would make Nebiyu loose simple draw by repetition. This happened after I merged search at the root with the others. I will have to look at the games to see if this happened in any of the games so far. But anyway I will feel safer updating it so I let you know when I have fixed that.

Also it has serious problem with developing its pieces. It take really long to move its e2 and d2 pawns unless the start position already does it . Its bishops are usually stuck in the back rank so getting them out will give it a better fighting chance. To solve this I have increased centralization bonus and also trying to turn the game tactical by lowering the value of a pawn and adding check extension seems to help a bit against Bihasa. I will do these changes.

Thanks for running the tournaments.
