We can argue infinitely but why do we not first measure the interest among chess programmers with as main theme if they ever plan to attend an old style (off-line) programmer tournament where programmers gather to play.

What are their wishes, what are the obstacles for them, what would convince them to enter.

For that purpose I plan to create a(nother) poll page (as the CCC software is insufficient), do a(nother) programmer mailing (I think I have most of the programmers email, est. about 80-90) with a call to participate in the poll.

The gathered data will be important for tournament organizers like the CSVN and the ICGA.

But first I think it's crucial the poll should contain the right questions, I will open a thread in the Programmer Section for that purpose.

There are two separate issues.

(1) competition

(2) education

I'm 66 years old, I am mainly interested in (1). Ala' CCT and such online events where I don't have to take time away from work and family.

Younger people can learn a LOT from attending the Olympiad, attending the various paper sessions, and learn what is going on first-hand.

Both of these have a place. The older you get the less you will learn from paper presentations. So you will likely find two separate classes of people responding. The ICGA's focus still has to remain on (2), and they partially do so by hosting the competition (which attracts new people) and by the conference presentations (which educates the new participants).
