Hi Elco,
You must test these changes on history prunning with games, do so only with positions is dangerous, in some positions will be better and others worse.

Wonderful Shaun! How can I thank you!
One small thing I can maybe say in return is that, inspired by this result, I sat down again to do some code and the Fischer (LMR) Reductions are now officially an existing item!
Only thing is I don't know yet exactly what the Fischer Reductions are doing!

Not bad at all I think, while the solution is found at a greater depth, 14 ply, than with Toga Checkov Beta 4 and just a little bit slower, but a possible offset is that mysteriously for me the solution depth 14 is reached in a very short time. And the PV with 1.Bf6 Rfc8 2.Qe5 Rxc4 is right this time, found at 8 minutes, it's not a record mind you, but also not very bad. This time somehow no terrible horizon effects are visible...
Fischer LMR reductions already start at depth = 5
How will this end
This cannot possibly go right!

Hi Elco,

Thanks people! And Pedro, yes, the proposed code seemed to have very serious horizon limitations if I start at depth 6. I cannot recommend it especially the double/triple reductions but I'm trying something slightly different now.mariaclara wrote:![]()

Re: A little test
Sadly, this position Toga Checkov Beta 4j now can't solve anymore in twenty seconds going over Arasan 7 testsuite. I hope that this phenomenon only occurs if the position seems already lost. For Mr. Tueschen; the new reductions are now called Fischer History Reductions, not to be confused with Fail High Reductions from Ed I Believe, and Random Transpositions is another phenomenon displayed mainly by Fritz, as Christopher is trying to explain in another post. You almost got it right though. Just working on getting the randomness under control.

Re: A little test
Err, whaT do you mean with working? Do you plan to create your own engine or what is this all about? Not that I would want to disturb any kind of hobby, but why not putting that energy in something of your own? I'm just trying to understand. Perhaps that part of the topic (motivation) was already discussed somewhere else?Eelco de Groot wrote:Sadly, this position Toga Checkov Beta 4j now can't solve anymore in twenty seconds going over Arasan 7 testsuite.

My deleted reply in the other thread, I hope this post can remain, sorry to the persons whose fair posts in the other thread got removed that I called for moderation, I explained my objections there.

It's like when you are a sculptor and try to make a human likeness in a statue, try getting around studying and analyzing human proportions first. You can't. That is my deepest reason for studying Fruit and I think I'm not alone in thinking this.
Of course it is nice if I could build such a program totally from the ground up, but I can't do that I readily admit it, you have to be an accomplished programmer first, like Fabien and even he had the experience of years writing Othello programs first before he started Fruit. Not that I won't want to learn that, but I'm just starting with the portions in a chess program that I know best. There is no need to participate in a tournament as if I had created this program all by myself, I would not dream of it. It is just another category of chessprograms, where everyone can add their own little bit just as they like as long as they keep to the GPL license, and it has absolutely zero to do with clones, I wish you had that figured out by now Rolf, but I am sure that you will eventually. Certain other persons will not I am afraid.

Well Rolf maybe an analogy would be jazz music, where people take a well known tune that they like very much, a 'standard' tune if you like, and give it their own twist, their own flavour. It is old and yet it is new also, it is repetition and yet never the same, in the copying there is praise and the recognition that there are some things that can not be improved, because they are universal. I think that Fabien Letouzy's work in Fruit is one of those universal works of art, like Michelangelo's statue of David maybe, that you just can not get around anymore.

I'm not acting for other people, and a short reply would suffice about your reasons for all this work. Thanks.[...irrelevant post here...]

My answer to you there was as follows:Eelco de Groot wrote:My deleted reply in the other thread, I hope this post can remain, sorry to the persons whose fair posts in the other thread got removed that I called for moderation, I explained my objections there.
You are on the right track. I expected much less from people who come with their "own" creation. Understzood that they know how the ideas work in such super marvels like Fruit, I would hope that many used the ideas now. Because then it would depend on the novelties that they would add. That is progress in my eyes. However a slightly modified fruit in Toga with the same ideas and now after four years a modification more - where is the beef of the new ideas? What has this to do with programming if only certain parameters are tested, what normally also testing users could do? Of course the same question would exist for the many CM personalities. But the CM always remains the same. However here with Toga we do not speak of a personality aka Fruit but people beg that this IMO clone because it's Fruit, should participate in the CCT. To take your own example Michelangelo, a somehow tuned Fruit, now called Toga, doesnt add something to the art of David. However in Jazz it's different. There the interpretation by always different musicians is the message. Not the original tune. But a tournament is something something else again. There we have different programs all playing their (hopefully) own music. Many of them who already have digested the *ideas* of Fruit too. But Toga is NOT about a plus of new ideas to the old Fruit. (Therefore I asked for your work. You could well have planned to come out with your own program on the basis of all the Fruit ideas PLUS some of your own. But alas, I'm really sorry and I dont want to nag you, but if you dont have NEW ideas then you just shouldnt waste so much time with the Toga tuning. And nevertheless always talking of doing some code here and there or of programming stuff. Why not taking all your ideas to some new project of your own - this was my main question.)
===========================
And after it was raised that Toga would have 150 more *strength* than Fruit 4 years ago, I wrote the following note:
I would like to object against such a short cut. Just take a theoretical example. Then you optimize the code for over 4 years and you test the different new versions against original well know programs, but these programs can never be tuned against this say Fruit clone of the 24th generation, then it might well be that you get such a boost, but that cant be called *strength*. It's a statistical test artefact. I dont know if my objection could be made clear. We can well discuss it. A test takes for granted that all the members have the same chance to develop but if you come from the outside and create extra conditions for a singular participant then you cant interprete the results as if it has participated under the same conditions as all others.
Another no no could be seen in a sudden tornament participation of such extra tunes clone. What xould be the motivation. I have a choice. I get it as a form of Rybka prevention measure to somehow weaken the favorite program... I am certain that this is the motif for Toga cluster clones and such some. That shouldnt be allowed. Neither the so called testing tolerated...
[I was told that I should repeat these messages because everything had been deleted in the other thread but not because it was directed against my opinions. Thanks.]

So, Rolf, you think they must ban Toga cluster and prevent it to beat Rybka?Rolf wrote:My answer to you there was as follows:Eelco de Groot wrote:My deleted reply in the other thread, I hope this post can remain, sorry to the persons whose fair posts in the other thread got removed that I called for moderation, I explained my objections there.

I would like to make changes to the evaluation function of Toga so these testresults are not saying very much, because they will change with any changes you make, but I was happy with this result anyway, maybe just one or two positions more should be possible one day...:

Can I ask if this is a single core version or the MP version of Toga. If this is the single core version is the MP version available. Thanks
