Your 162.5 to 137.5 result for K5 over h2 is pretty significant statistically and certainly at odds with some other reported results such as IPON. There are of course many differences in the tests, your shorter time limit, your higher increment relative to base time, your hash table size, intel vs. AMD, ponder off vs. ponder on, etc. I'd like to know which factors favor Komodo and which favor Houdini. If you can spare the computer time, it would be interesting to rerun your match with some conditions changed, for example 2'+1" instead of 1' + 1", or ponder on, or 128 hash size. Aside from getting more sample size, it might show that we have a problem with small increments or with ponder on or with small hash for example, and if so perhaps we can do something about it.

programmers publish and sell their engines no matter how strong other engines are.
junior was sold. vitruvius is sold. chiron is sold. hiarcs or shredder will be sold. and komodo also. what has this to do with houdini ?

If you have Komodo 4 it will cost you $20 to get Komodo 4 MP - that was the promise.

Since we are not going to release Komodo 4 MP or 4.1 MP you will get Komodo 5 MP instead by paying only $20. Pay the $20 and you will get Komodo 5 SP now while you are waiting for the MP version.

So it's up to you - if you have already purchased Komodo 4 you can pay $20 and get the SP now and the MP for free - or else you can wait and pay $20 later for the MP when it's ready. We believe this is a much better deal for you than what we were going to do.

Maybe it is just me, but I have no clue how anyone could complain about anything you and Larry have done. If a stats guy was to take the elo increase from version 4 to version 5 when it is determined, and then factor in the price you charge, the average charge for every 5 elo increase would have to be the lowest in the history of computer chess. Or just translated: Komodo 5 is the best "bang for the buck" - and I cannot even find a close second.

(Please, no one be a big enough idiot to respond to me by throwing a freeware up to me in comparison. I have had my quota of the brainless for a few days at least.)

in the time I bought v 4.0 it was the promise that 4.1 SP will be for free.
The MP version buyers will pay additional.

Assume: I was not interested for MP version and was waiting for promised 4.1 and.... I am getting nothing.

The offer to pay another 19.95 $ for v5.0 SP instead of getting v4.1SP looks like a bad joke for me.

Version 4.1 was to be a very minor upgrade - but if you send me your email address I will provide you with the same version (for free) that was going to be the Komodo 4.1 SP upgrade. Just tell me what your platform is and I will make a special compile for you. Use the same email you used to make the original purchase for the audit trail.

Hi, i am sorry, my prediction of ''around 10 elo'' of improvement is probably wrong althought now i would wait to see cegt and ccrl. If i read correctly the result of ipon chess it is about 23 elo.

But there are some things that don't convince me.

1. I expected much more than +23 after almost a year from Komodo 4.

You must be using fuzzy math. We release Komodo 4 in late Dec early Jan. It's a little more than 6 months.

I can see 102 elo improvement in the CCRL 40/40 for
Rybka3 single processor



Rybka 3 64-bit 3077 +9 −9 73.9% −185.0 29.8% 6034
Rybka 2.3.2a 64-bit 2975 +8 −8 67.8% −126.7 37.0% 6088


Rybka3 single processor relative to Rybka2.3.2a gave more than 100 elo improvement at 40/4

I do not remember the exact price of Rybka3 single processor but I will not be surprised if the price per elo improvement was lower than the case of Komodo.

We can see that Houdini suffers most from changing platform from Intel to AMD. The Komodo4 compile was a bit better on AMD than Komodo5, but still Komodo5 loses less than Houdini on AMD platform.

So there is no need for a special AMD compile I guess. Maybe Robert should think about an AMD compile for his next Houdini version to score even better on IPON rating list (which uses only AMD platforms for tests)...

If Komodo is 20 Elo within Houdini's level plus or minus, then we have another very strong engine that can be used for analysis, and play. Where's the problem in that?

I'm running same test with ponder on now. Did switch to F11 , couldn't find a way to do it in F12.........

K5 has lead all the way , but it has been close so far ....
117 games = +40 , -38 , =39
I suppose it will all be small sample / marg error stuff , but is what it is........

update after 300 games

I'd be more than happy to run more tests .
