Maybe someone can confirm this, but Lucas proposed a bugfix 7 days ago for a TT issue that looks like it could have caused the TCEC missed winning move. Probably there was a discussion on Fishcooking but I have not read the threads about this yet. But on Rybkaforum they said this was fixed with the new patch. Too late for a possibly vital point, that could have given Stockfish some confidence back that it can also win games from Komodo, not only lose from Komodo. We can only hope that in turn Komodo becomes overconfident and starts making silly mistakes near the end.
hoping Komodo makes silly mistakes? Really?

I hope Stockfish plays as best as it can. I would never hope it makes "silly mistakes".

A lot of interesting things in the game Komodo just won. It gave SF the bishop pair and still had total control of the position. I had thought that the bishop pair always trumps any positional discomfort and usually it is the side without the bishop pair that is looking for a way to dissipate pressure that might come from the bishop pair. Komodo then liquidated into a bishop and Knight endgame ... again I always thought that in the endgame with equal material a bishop can be more useful than a Knight ... but Komodo thought otherwise and did so convincingly.

First game won by either side with black and must say that the chess level is way over my head. I don't know if it is my imagination but Komodo plays some really beautiful "human" chess. Somehow I feel that Komodo's play is super highly tuned positional chess and SF is super highly tuned brute strength chess. Again it could be just me but it really beautiful how Komodo places its pieces around the board.

I mean look at this ... my God ... the move 56. ... f6!! .... sacrificing a pawn and allowing a possible devastating bishop + pawn combo for white with Be7 ... just to be able to pull a few tempi to allow Bc7! and Qf4 ... all of a sudden the white King changes from being super comfy to super naked! Such a creative "human" plan ... alas played by a silicon brain! Amazing! I wonder how many other engines see this plan!

You were not alone in this opinion. While watching the live game I could see others voice the same conclusion, and even I must admit that I thought the same as you did.

I could see Magnus or Morozevich pushing the black side of this type of endgame off the top of my my head, but not many others.

I am not sure a human would want to allow such a possible pawn sacrifice as the possibility of white holding the pawn with Be7 looks scary if not devastating ... plus black's bishop and queen battery needed 3 tempi which in such a position seems slow. If a human did play such a plan it surely would be considered a "brilliancy" and would be eternally played out in books and other media. Komodo did shuffle around a bit and it was a cat and mouse play with SF seemingly willing to go for a draw, but f6 really changed the game dynamics and that was an obvious push for a win. But the game was still on after this plan and it took some absolutely precise endgame play to take home the point.

Re: Komodo strikes first at the TCEC Superfinal

Post by whereagles »

I watched that game live and was appalled by SF's lack of understanding of the position... shutting down the Q-side was a clear strategic error and the only way out was to bail out the king into c2. But SF is no king-walker :D

K on the other hand understood perfectly what to do: push f5 and go rampant.

It just seems K has more chess knowledge than SF. Superior SMP is not gonna cut it at this level, even if SF has it.

I do not see f6 as a pawn sacrifice.
material is equal after exf6 Bxf6 and f6 is a natural human move who see no win for black by doing nothing.

Komodo did not play Bxf6 but Bf4 but in this case I do not see a reason to talk about the move 50...f6 and not about the move 51...Bf4 that is the real sacrifice.

Edit:Even Bf4 is not a real sacrifice because after 52.Be7 black can easily get the pawn back by Bg5 and I see no risk of losing the game so nothing special also about Bf4(the only strange thing is that stockfish see it as better for white at small depths).

Another black win for K ... I don't think I have ever seen SF look like such a patzer! Really seemed to have no clue what was going on and never saw danger when it was obvious that the position was totally lost. Hard to believe that in this position after playing Kxb2 that SF actually thought its disadvantage was only -.64 !!!! I think K was showing a more realistic -4.00 !!!

There are not many positions that I can play SF on 8 cores and beat it quite easily when I only have a .64 advantage on the evaluation meter, but this is one of them. Hard to see how SF missed that it was completely losing as there were many winning lines that were quite obvious. Could this also be a bug ??? I mean if it was one obscure winning line that needed a waiting move or zug ... ok ... but here there must have been more than 10 winning lines here !!! Almost any move wins quite easily!

I tried the position with an older SF 5 on my work computer (much weaker hardware) and it seems to give a much saner evaluation.

Looking at the TCEC website and looking at depth and speed of SF ... there seems to be a HUGE drop in depth and speed just before this move! Do you think that this had something to do with it. It really looks like something happened. Have to say that SF seems to have huge stability problems in situations where the evaluations start moving around.
