Forward pruning and selectivity?
Can someone give me a little more detail on these engine options for shredder and how to correctly adjust the settings? Thanks.

Re: Forward pruning and selectivity?
Basically, you can always assume that the default settings are ok, or suitable for the "general purpose." In other words, you can try other adjustments but you do not need to worry that something is incorrect if you simply ignore these settings.
If you intend to search improved settings, I suggest to collect (many!) results from the default settings first, as a basis for comparison. For example, a match using a large set or predefined openings, and than repeat it with identical conditions, with the only difference being the settings adjustment.
For recent Shredder versions, alternative settings have not been a topic in the message boards, but that doesn't mean improvements are impossible (especially for specific conditions, or against a particular opponent, etc.).

1. Under the "Tools" menu, select the "Pruning" item.ChessAddict wrote:Can someone give me a little more detail on these engine options for shredder and how to correctly adjust the settings? Thanks.
2. When the dialog box comes up, hit the "Settings" tab.
3. Where it says "Prune Bad Moves" select "always"
4. Where it says "Prune Good Moves" select "never"
5. Where it says "Just Know The Best Move" select "off" (this will have your program search for the best move, never set this to "on" or your progam will just always make the best move without searching!)

Sorry, I was joking a bit. I thought item #5 was making it obvious but I forget sometimes that this is an international community and subtleties might not be completely recognized.ChessAddict wrote:Does Shredder 8 have these options?
