Browsing chess game databases?
Adding to the original author's question, what would be a good (preferably free) program for browsing these files? It should be able to search a given position from the database and show all the games in a tree-view format.

http://www.chessbase.com/download/cblight2007/index.asp
= Free CB Light 2007
It doesn't use a tree view by default (but a list of the games), but you can mark all or a selection of games - for example a search/filtered result - and choose "selection to book" from the right-click menu. Then it will create a temporary book tree to browse.
The free version cannot save and cannot copy information to the clipboard though. But it is useful if you only want to view games. You can also run cb-native analysis engines in it (UCI only with full version). Also, it includes a Playchess client which looks somewhat better than F8's.
Unfortunately, it has also a size restriction: max. ~32,000 but many collections for download will be much smaller anyway.
Supports CBH,CBF,PGN database formats for games.

Try SCID/CHESSDB
http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/
Once installed, it lets you download 3.5 Million games; a database comparable to chessbase's megabase
