How much memory typically does the chess program use while playing engine vs. engine computer matches?

It depends on you Arnold. You can configure most engines to use whatever amount you want them to use. Note that most engines prefer multiples of 2 such as 2, 4, 8, 16, 32...etc. I usually use 32-64 MB and I do not test engines that uses more than that amount in total Ram.

If you use Arena, when running the program it will tell you how
much you are using next to the eng.running. In the upper
right corner you can see how much free ram you have.

On my PC's, the amount of free RAM, that Arena shows (nearly) always corresponds with that, what other utilities (Statbar, CPUCool) show...

There are free memory tools which can display that, dynamically and graphically. In Win98, I use FreeMem but I am sure there are some to find for any Windows version. Google for: windows memory display tool freeware (or similar search words)...
