My Q6600 computer is arriving... which OS to load ?

Post by Ponti »

I ordered it with a blank 250 GB Samsung SATA-2 HD.

First idea is to load XP 32-bits for compatibility reasons and dual-boot with another OS (maybe I`ll buy another HD for that) - sometimes I work at home... but I`ll use it mainly with chess programs. Should I dual boot it with...

1) XP 64 bits? (hard to find here... and maybe expensive)
2) Linux 64 bits? (if only CB 9 could run in Linux...)

P.S.: No, thanks, I'm not interested in that new crap OS MS is selling...

I cannot think of anything that I personally use that had problems running Win XP 64bit. I like it even more than Win XP Pro 32bit because it seems to have a "lighter" footprint. Add to that the fact that 64bit Rybka runs 60% faster on equivalent Ghz .... then you have a compelling reason to choose XP 64.

I would say Linux - but the truth is that this is not because it is necessarily the best choice for you - it's an emotional reaction against Micro$oft - a company that has been found guilty of illegal anti-competitive practices by both US and EU courts, and which, IMHO, charges too much for its products.

I downloaded Win XP x64 trial edition - I`m going to try it first. I also finally discovered a store which sells it (at São Paulo - US$240).

Questions:

1) Chessbase products , CB9, Shredder9, wil work with XPx64?
2) Arena ?! ChessPartner ?
3) ChessAssistant ???
4) Software to connect to ICC ?

I have a system with a Q6600 and I use 32 bit XP Pro. About the only thing holding be back from a 64 bit OS is that there aren't any 64 bit DGT board drivers.

I think there are drivers for 64bit ... I remember someone posting those drivers more than a year or two ago. I would post and ask about 64bit drivers for DGT board ... I am sure someone will post a link. As for $240 for XP64bit ... search on Google how you can get it for free. Microsoft seems very lax about 64bit XP

If you only EVER want to use it for chess, that's fine. But for example, many other programs don't run on XP X64
- BBC iPlayer
- Channel 4 video on demand
(here in UK)

Yet, the latter at least runs on Vista X64 and I think the BBC iPayer does as well

So - be very wary of XP X64 - it is woefully supported - and seriously consider Vista X64. I have both, I have no real issues with Vista as long as you disable user account control...
