I have been looking through the rating lists to try and find lists of good engines to buy for dual core 32 machines on 32 bit op systems (just bought my new dual core laptop).
It's actually not as easy as I thought. Most of the MP lists have loads of 64 bit engines on them or 4 core engines. Unless I keep looking in the wrong place!?
Dr Deeb - what does your private list indicate please?
I'm going to buy Deep Shredder 11 as I really like its playing style and think it'll be good for my analysis and will probably buy rybka MP 3.0 when it comes out (anyone know when that is?)
Which are the good MP freeware engines? Glaurung must be strong!

Hi Roberts,
Beside Rybka you can definitely buy Deep Shredder 11,Glaurung is a great free choice as well as Bright 0.2c....
Personaly for my analysis I prefer Deep Fritz 10.1.0.0 and depending on the position Deep Junior 10.0.1.0
Don't forget the great free released engine Bright 0.2c ....
Here is a snap shot of the rating of these engines after playing nearly 200 games playing a slow time controls:
Deep Shredder 11 2877
Deep Fritz 10.1.0.0 2822
Deep Junior 10.0.1.0 2800
Glaurung 2.0.1 MP 2766
Bright 0.2c MP 2712

Re: Best MP (2 core) 32 bit engines
I intend to use the Fritz 10 GUI (Not Deep Fritz 10 which I don't have)
Once I install Rybka 2.3.2a MP (say) as a UCI engine how do I know it is using both cores? And how would I ask it to only use one core should I wish to do that at some point?
I'm thinking I might want to analyse a position with both Rybka and Bright simultaneously so want them on one core each. Is that possible?

You can check that with the Task Manager. In Vista (and I think also in XP), this can be run from the menu which appears if you press Ctrl-Alt-Del. But press it only ONCE. There are also freeware process tools which will provide the same info. Alternatively, in Vista sometimes I simply look at the sidebar gadget which shows the CPU consumption, if it's 50% or 100% on my dual core.LRoberts wrote: Once I install Rybka 2.3.2a MP (say) as a UCI engine how do I know it is using both cores? MP-Rybka has a setting "Max CPUs"(*) in the engine options to decide how many cores to use. Bright too, but has also a line in the ini file for that in case you want to restrict it to one cpu core.
