fixed depth against 4 minutes/40 moves question

Post by Uri Blass »

Is there an interface that support games at fixed depth for one side against specific time control for the second side?

I think that a good way to get rating for the weak engines is simply to test strong engines at fixed depthes and give them rating but in order to do it we need to be able to test fixed depth against 4 minutes/40 moves.

But, fixed depth means nothing, because all engines count depth differently (in the sense that they do reductions and extensions differently.)

A better approach would be to use fixed time (and it would work, as long as the fixed time is very exact.)

fixed depth is not done to compare between the commercial engines but
to have a better rating for the weak engines at 4 minutes/40 moves.

fixed depth is more accurate then fixed time because fixed depth is the same for all hardwares when fixed time may be different for testers with different hardware.

We can start by rybka depth 11 against many normal engines and get rating for rybka depth 11 and later start matches with different depth between engines to get rating for toga depth 12 toga depth 11 toge depth 10 rybka depth 10,... rybka depth 8.

We can continue by testing rybka depth 8 against different weak engines and get accurate rating for the weak engines.

One way to implement this would be to play under WinBoard with the /sd option set, and use one engine with Odd Gunnar Malin's InBetween adapter to intercept the transmission of the sd command to that engine (replacing it by some command that is ignored).

If the engine set to a fixed depth that way would exceed the time control that WB applies (determined by what you wanted the other engine to play) you could use WinBoard_x or WinBoard_F to enlarge the available time for the depth-limited engine, by using the time-odds feature that these GUIs support. Simply type two timese separated by a slash in the menu field where you owuld otherwise type a single time, and it applies the first time to white and the second time to black.

I do not understand how to do it.
I even do not know how to make a match at fixed depth under winboard in the first place(I know how to do it in Fritz interface)

I also do not understand how to use the Odd Gunnar adapter to tell one engine to ignore the sd command.
