Arena GUI and winboard problem?

Post by Jouni »

When I try to analyze PGN game segments, engine always thinks it's whites move even it's actually blacks! No problem to UCI engines.
Any ideas what's wrong? I haven't used Arena for a long time.

Try other WB engines. Many WB engines can't analyze. All UCI engines can either analyze or can be tricked to do so.

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

I am not 100% sure at the moment, but I think Arena 1.1 (the last final version) does not have that problem.

I have decided to use 1.1 as long as 2.0 (aka 1.99x) is beta, still. For typical tasks like engine matches, 1.1 already has very many features, more than any other GUI I know, and it is stable and reliable for that purpose.

I think it had a problem though, if a PGN notation (to load from a file) has very many comments, variations and sub-variations. But I am not sure about that either. I hope the variation handling and notation display including all vars/sub-vars will be improved in 2.0, to be more like in Shredder Classic and Fritz interfaces. But I don't know if this is planned or which priority it has.

I did mention that in the Arena forum once or twice, longer ago IIRC prior to the 1.1 release, but I quit testing that particular feature because it didn't seem to have priority. The rest of Arena 1.1 is great and I used it for engine tests often not having any GUI problems at all.

It's kind of like the eastside vs westside thing. Each has their own benefits. Winboard for example is the least buggiest, least memory using GUI. If an engine doesnt support winboard protocol a user of winboard would have to use UCI2WB or something similar.

WinBoard would definately be my first choice if I would do a lot of engine matches with WB-engine vs. WB-engine. But the "configuration comfort" is a joke and virtually excludes any non-nerds...

I always use WinBoard in combination with the PSWBTM tournament manager, and found that a very user-friendly combination.
