we will continue to play chess as humans against the old computers, old and new engines, and even as humans on chess servers
i think we will play chess until we are planted in the ground as dead or we go senile which ever comes first(preferably the former)
but my post was speaking to whether it makes sense for those like you and me to continue to post on boards like this anymore
today the interest on boards like this ..as i mentioned.. it is all about Elo's of players substituting themselves for their engines in chess servers
i say our time is past..not to turn away from the Royal game..but to let these boards go..into the hands of the younger generation X and we must retire to the comfort of our studies to play the game or read about the game as if the internet no longer exists for us as it was before 1997
we should retire in grace and not hang on like old men with tales of yesteryear and the good ol days
In Fact i will now stop posting while in mid post..

I don't understand you guys quite honestly. While it is true, my competitive years are not past me by any means, I always thought playing chess was fun in itself, independently of all factors.
Sure, you may find playing these super mega-engines not fun at all, and I can quite understand, but playing against another thinking (erring) person is still a hoot, no?
I know too many people who become paralyzed because they link their egos too tightly with their elos. I met a guy in a poker tournament the other day who told me he had quit chess because of the time he was forced to spend studying. Forced? I was astonished as I had never heard anyone being forced to study it.
He explained (he didn't know me, or that I played as well) that as a 1600 rated player, he had an obligation to study to maintain his competitive edge, and this was too demanding. I asked whether one might not just play for the enjoyment of the game, and he immediately said no, it didn't work that way. In chess one has obligations....
Strangely enough, I've met all kinds of these players. I met another one who told me chess was no fun because you had these kids (he wasn't very specific) who memorized entire encyclopedias of openings, making it more a competition of who memorized best. I tried explaining that unless one was knocking on the door of the top 50 players in the world this was very far from true. He was rated some 1400 or so, and refused to be convinced. I remember thinking he must have fallen for an opening trap, and was bitter about it still.
Sigh...
