Jim Ablett´s chess pages

Post by Norbert Raimund Leisner »

Hello together,

concerning: http://homepages.tesco.net/henry.ablett/jims.html

I use Windows XP SP3 (32bit), Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2 x 2,4 Ghz)
with 1 GB RAM and nvidiaGeForce 8500GT (512MB)

Here are some absurdities / bugs:

Obender 3.24
> Win32 Intel compiler with *exe-file for the version 3.2.5a does not exist

ZZZZZZ 3.4.4
> link to http://home.planet.nl/~gijsbert.wiesenekker/zzzzzz is broken
(error 404 - page cannot be found)

Sjeng 11.2
> application "win32.exe-file" cannot be executed - gdbm3.dll is missing

Gk 0.90
> link to http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/html/enginesindex.htm works,
but then from the "Ridderkerk-website" the link to "Gk-homepage"
is broken (error 404 - page cannot be found)

Hoichess 0.10.3
> link to http://www.hoicher.de/ hoichess is broken ( error 404 - page
cannot be found)

Gerbil Release 02
> link to http://www.seanet.com/~brucemo/gerbil/gerbil.htm is broken
(error 404 - page cannot be found)

Toga II 3.1.2 SE
> http://ccrlchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040 then link "Toga II 1.4.1 SE - 4 CPU"
- "download" (right above of this side) is another possibility

Resp 0.19 / Scorpio 2.0 / Knight Dreamer 3.3 ( alle three parts)
> download is impossible because there is no Windows message
whether the files can be opened e.g. with WinRAR or be saved on the
harddisk as usually
> perpetual repetitions of the procedure
-- click to start download
-- your download is starting
-- processing download request
when you click on the corresponding links - a phenomenon which is
for me inexplicable

Romi Chess P3K
> link to http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/html/details/RomiChess is broken
(error 404 - page cannot be found)

Amy 0.8
> link to http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/html/details/Amy.html is broken
(error 404 - page cannot be found)

Knight Cap 2.4 SE
> application "KnightCap.exe-file" cannot be executed - cygwin1.dll is
missing

Sjeng 7.0 - 8.0
> 7.3.1. / 7.4 / 7.4.1 / 7.4.2 / 8.0.exe -files cannot be executed -
gdbm3.dll is missing

Vanilla Chess 2.6g / KM 2.6g
> link to ftp://ftp.samba.org/pub/unpacked/KnightCap/vchess
- you get message "no such file or directory"

Braincrack Alpha
> http://dirks.homeunix.org - server not found

Fairy Max 4.8t
> 16-Bit-MS-DOS- system ; NTVDM - invalid order
> CS: 0f65 - IP:025d - OP: 6563652064

Suggestion for Eduard Nemeth´s website about Chess Genius Classic 7:
1) see http://archive.org/web/web.php ("wayback-machine")
2) put into this row [without inverted commas]
3) choose the link "Mar21, 2003"
4) Path Order Error - IGNORE that - at the same time you see on the left
border the link "ChessGenius Classic 7"
5) click on it
6) then on the link "Downloads"

Examples in which way chess engines like Ruffian, Gandalf and Shredder
can be embedded into this GUI (languages: German / English)

Regards,
Norbert

Hi Norbert,

Thanks for pointing out some problems on my homepage. I'll address them, though I think calling them adsurdities is a bit strong.

Let's go through some of things you've found.

Firstly broken links to the original owners website. This is left if there is no newer website mainly because the websites seem to come and go.
One week they are up, next down. It's simply to much bother for me to keep updating this on daily basis.

Obender 3.24. - I only offer chess engines on my site that have compiled myself. Version 3.24 is the latest version with src that I am able to compile.

Sjeng 11.2 - If you look in the src/bin folder you will find gdbm3.dll.

Toga II 3.1.2 SE - Not sure what you're saying here. My download link is for the version I compiled myself.

Resp 0.19/Scorpio 2.0 - Just normal single zip file downloads.

Knightdreamer 3.3 - I will put some instructions here on how to join the three downloaded Winrar archive parts together.

KnightCap 2.4SE - I'll fix error this today. Thanks for informing me.

Fairy Max 4.8t - You'll have to speak to H.G Muller about that.

I suppose Graham is not here. Therefore
if I might comment on, Norbert: Welcome
to the real world of computer chess engines!

Best,
Graham is still around and kicking..As for Norbert, it doesnt hurt to sound thankful once in a while, I suspect that Norbert might be using a translator to write his messages.

OK

And what are your own positive contributions to the CCC community so far ?

Having a look at all your posts I just see questions and critical remarks.

I propose you come back for your next post when you will have contributed let's say one tenth of what Jim brought to us all along the years.

And if you learn to be a little more polite inbetween than you will surely be welcome again.

Marc

PS I take the opportunity for thanking Jim warmly for all these wonderful things he contributed .
By the way ...
Moderators : how can you accept the way this almost unknown guy posted his stuff?

Because no one has complained Marc,Jim is so nice and tolerant to do so....
I think that Tony is probably right, the guy is using one of these stupid online translators....
