I have an HP dv6704nr laptop (AMD X2 TK-57) with Vista Premium 32-Bit and installed XP64 on a second partition. Everything seems to be running fine except a couple of problems I just noticed.
1) On the Fritz benchmark in XP64 I get only 1.7 relative speed with both cores running, and with one core I get approx. 0.8.
In Vista I get over 4.3 on the same benchmark with two cores.
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me as I have all the drivers installed minus audio.
2) XP64 hangs on the boot logo screen with the scroll bar running from left to right and I don't get this problem with Vista. The OS eventually starts but after fifteen minutes. Could this be related to 1)? This was from a fresh install of XP64, which also doesn't make any sense to me, maybe a mobo/cpu/hardware issue of some kind?
Any ideas?

Re: Problem with processor/OS
Most probably you have a bad installation of the XP x64....I recommend to remove it and make a new installation as a second operation system....If the problem persists, then there is some kind of uncompaitability with the hardware of the laptop....

Re: Problem with processor/OS
You could try installing Vista x64 and be done with it. I was able to install Vista Ultimate x64 using my OEM 32-bit key so it should only cost you the price of the media. Obviously worse case scenario is that you reformat only to find that the key won't work with the 64-bit media, but on the MS website they check the key before sending the media, so this shouldn't be the case:

I personally couldn't be bothered with dual-booting - way too much hassle.

Thank you Marc - yes I wrote CBASCII, many years ago - I don't even have the source code any more. My interest in chess and chess programs has picked up again and this site seems like the place to be for discussing such things.Marc Lacrosse wrote:Hi Andytrojanfoe wrote: Cheers,

Re: Problem with processor/OS
Thanks for the tip. I reinstalled and ran into the same problem. It is definitely starting to look like a hardware compatibility problem. Also, every now and then when I wake my computer up from the screen saver I get an error: "Machine Check Error... ", which I think is some kind of problem with the processor, and this is only when running XP64.
I'll just wait till I get another desktop computer as this laptop is too finicky to play around with like this.

Re: Problem with processor/OS
I am going to give this a try. Dual-booting was a breeze with my desktop computer, before I got rid of it. It was much more resilient than this HP, hardware/driver-wise. Took me days to get all this drivers together just to be able to install XP64 with my wireless card working
Thanks

Yeah sounds bad. Looks like you'll have to run 32-bit only on the laptop I guess.
