Problem: Ubuntu 8.04, wine, uci-engines, ChessProgramx.exe

Post by Eizenhammer »

Hello,

I cannot import uci-engines into Fritz8 using wine and Ubuntu 8.04.
(Fritz 8 because it is the newest version that does not crash when one clicks a menue, but i think the problem with uci is also there with the newer versions.)

With Suse for example this always worked really well, but i never succeeded using ubuntu.

Is there a workaround, does anybody have this working?
(and yes, xboard is the best program ever, but does not solve this problem ;-) )

Hi Peter,

I have recently been using xboard + polyglot + wine on ubuntu 8.04 with various xboard/uci win32 & linux engines.

Running 960 game tournaments at 1+1.

Some engines have difficulty on my slow machines [1.4 ghz] when in combination with both polyglot AND wine [it seems] [Arasan and ProDeo and Rybka lose games on time]

Here is an example command from my script.

Code: Select all

xboard $OPTIONS -fcp ./xpdnt -fd ~/Chess/engines/xpdnt -scp ./polyglot_linux -sd ~/Chess/engines/ruffian -lgf ~/Chess/pgn/sherwin50.pgn -lgi $i -mg $MATCHES 2>>results
And the polyglot.ini in ruffian directory looks like this:

Code: Select all

[PolyGlot]

EngineDir = /home/opraus/Chess/engines/ruffian/
EngineCommand = wine ruffian.exe

I think I know what you are referring to. When you run Fritz8 GUI, you get a message "engine failed to load" (exact text may be a tad different but that's close).

This problem started with Ubuntu 8.04 and I think may have something to do with changes in Wine though that is just a guess on my part. I have not found a workaround other than to use something besides a Chessbase-supplied GUI.

Aquarium (if you have it or care to buy it) works fine under Wine by the way.

thanks for your efforts,
yes, xboard, of course. 8-)
I had the answer already integrated into the question:
The best program ever written, but ... .

Many thanks

Yes, this is the problem.

Thanks for the answer, Aquarium is an alternative, of course, and it is a kind of consolation to hear that the problem exists for others, too ;-)

Many thanks
