I cannot import uci-engines into Fritz8 using wine and Ubuntu 8.04.
(Fritz 8 because it is the newest version that does not crash when one clicks a menue, but i think the problem with uci is also there with the newer versions.)
With Suse for example this always worked really well, but i never succeeded using ubuntu.
Is there a workaround, does anybody have this working?
(and yes, xboard is the best program ever, but does not solve this problem )
I have recently been using xboard + polyglot + wine on ubuntu 8.04 with various xboard/uci win32 & linux engines.
Running 960 game tournaments at 1+1.
Some engines have difficulty on my slow machines [1.4 ghz] when in combination with both polyglot AND wine [it seems] [Arasan and ProDeo and Rybka lose games on time]
I think I know what you are referring to. When you run Fritz8 GUI, you get a message "engine failed to load" (exact text may be a tad different but that's close).
This problem started with Ubuntu 8.04 and I think may have something to do with changes in Wine though that is just a guess on my part. I have not found a workaround other than to use something besides a Chessbase-supplied GUI.
Aquarium (if you have it or care to buy it) works fine under Wine by the way.

Yes, this is the problem.

Thanks for the answer, Aquarium is an alternative, of course, and it is a kind of consolation to hear that the problem exists for others, too
