Fortress detection program

Post by Anil »

Is there any program that can identify fortress in chess? ... at lower search depths 14 to 20.

Would it be feasible to build chess programs with highly specific fortress functions such as:

1. Build fortress (so that king is always safe and hence, worst case scenario would be draw)

2. Detect fortress (to check for opponent's fortress)

3. Break fortress (to strategically break open opponents fortress; maybe by sacrificing 1-2 pawns)

Just curious. :?

Some notables fortress :
Smirin-Hiarcs : http://www.chessbase.com/Events/events.asp?pid=122
Kasparov-deepblue : K overlooked the idea but analyses show it was possible (rook+pawn vs queen)

Others :

[d]7r/8/6k1/p3p3/Pp1pPp2/1PpP1Pp1/2P1K1P1/8 b - - 7 4

[d]4r3/1b1p4/3p4/1p1p1k2/pP1P4/P1P2PP1/1P3K2/8 b - - 2 14

No, the programs who show 0.00 score in not totally blocked fortress positions can do it only by cheating. They also show 0.00 score in some non-fortress positions.

Usual fortress positions require some logical thinking ability.
So programs are totally lost there.
Here is a famous trivial example:

[d] 8/p3k3/2p4r/1pPp4/3P4/PP3PP1/3P4/6K1 b - - 0 1
