A great accomplishment! I logged on to watch the final game, but left after I thought Micromax was lost. It must have scrapped its way back for a draw. Very cool.

Indeed, micro-Max was in big trouble in the decisive game, but it could trade down to an end-game with unlike Bishops, with an advantage of two connected passers for the opponent (Bestia). This was a dead draw, althou Bestia evaluated it as +5.

I think the way micro-Max played it was a direct consequence of its high scoring of Pawns on 6th and 7th rank, so it choose the only line it could see to prevent that on the short term. It was a bit lucky in the sense that this short-term property of the position actually turned out to be a long lasting strategic property as well, rather than horizon effect.

OK, the final game was not a sparkling performance of micro-Max (it earned the qualification based on its earlier wins), but toughness and resilience in the face of a bad position contribute to the Elo of an engine just as much as brilliant attacking in good positions!

It might be hard to find improvements that would deliver more Elo than the characters they take to implement them.

I would suggest lowering the Elo scale by subtracting a thousand or two Elo from each player. Then you can add plenty more characters. :lol:
