I noticed for the first time last night that when i went to a chess engine folder and opened it up, the exe disappeared right before my eyes. I tried extracting it again from a saved zip file, and same thing. When extracted, it did not show up in engine folder. Then i tried moving the exe from my 1CPU box to the dual where the problem is. As soon as i opened the file with the exe- it disappeared. The exe is the executable for the program Feuerstein 0.4.5.2. This problem does not occur with the exe in Feuerstein 0.4.6 Graham also sent me a zip, and same thing happened in regard to 0.4.5.2.-- The point is i pretty much knew what was going on. My Norton Anti-Virus System was blocking the executable. It calls it Risk Name: infostealer.Gampass Risk Type: Virus Dependencies: No known ones
It states: There is an overall HIGH RISK IMPACT. This means your personal information and computing activities are severely affected. This risk may be very difficult to remove without assistance. The point here is sometimes Norton as well as Vista are way over-cautious and paranoid to the point they exclude things that arent really a big risk. But who knows in this case. I do know the exe works fine in my 1 CPU box and has caused me no trouble. I want to run this program badly, but its not a life or death deal. I can force Norton to accept the exe. Bottom line: WHAT SHOULD I DO!

Thanks for your reply- but it is going to be a bit difficult to check the exe for a virus when i can't even get it to extract without it disappearing. Could you possibly tell me a procedure for checking it with that in mind.
(Of course i could force Norton to ignore it and let it pass and then check it as you say- but by then if Norton is correct- the damage may well be done.)

I can also tell you that there are a very few virus programs that you will never get rid of unless you do a complete clean install of your windows system again. Happened to my Son. We used every anti-virus program we could find, including Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare. Took a clean install to return things to normal.
That's why I love my linux boxes. Never happens.

Hi George,
Earlier versions of Feuersteins are packed and get flagged by some antivirus.
It's packed with 'polyEne 0.01+ by Lennart Hedlund' polymorphic encryption packer.
It is safe and Not a virus. It just has similar signature to a virus and dumb antiviruses can't tell the difference.
If you want an unpacked version let me know.
Jim.
