Most Popular Internet Server?

Post by Sean Evans »

Hi, I currently play on the Chessbase PlayChess Server, but the population seems to be dropping at least at the times when I am playing so it is difficult to get a game. Where is the best place to play now??

I really depends on the time of day. PlayChess has a primarily European audience, so try to imagine what time it is in central Europe, and figure out the probable peak times. ICC has more Americans/Canadians proportionately, so that is different time frame. Chess Assistant Club is Russian, though seems very popular with South Americans as well. Chess21 is also quite popular. Both Chess21 and CAC are free, BTW.

http://chess21.com/ works for me.
It has a Java interface. Perhaps you do not have Java loaded on your system?

Actually, I was wrong. The link I followed to a page that looked like it might be a chess interface is one of those phony pages.

Playchess seems to have taken over ICC as the #1 chess site. ICC probably has a more hardcore audience. But technically speaking the most popular site might be Yahoo chess ... or the MSN site. Although I don't go there they must attract a huge audience simply due to being on such a high profile portal.

Playchess is still the number one site(Total online average 3000). Haven't tried FICS, but I heard it's also like ICC (Total online average: 1500)

If you are rated very higher, then you may find it difficult to get a game.
If you are rated around 2200-2400 at playchess, then you'd get a game immediately. There are more players rated <2000 in there, that's why it's difficult to get a game for higher rated players. Try Playing Evening- Night London time, I reckon there will be more players around that time. (Average 4000)

may be the other reason you don't get the game often nowadays is that more people are watching Anand-Kramnik Broadcast. So wait for that to end.

I play Yahoo. Its easy to get a game and no time wasted waiting
for a game. Very easy to log in and play right away.
There are a lot of people playing with programs which tend
to keep your score down. If your rating gets to high its hard
to get a game there with anyone that has a high rating.

Sometimes l play at ICC. If i can.t get a game soon i go
Yahoo. :) My rating is not to high anyway :) Not interested
in getting a high rating. Just happy to stay at 1700.

Best to you,

Gerold.
