Rybka 3

Post by eriq »

I have recently looked at a blitz match between Rybka 3 and toga 1.4.1se on fast hardware and was amazed and alittle frightened at the strength that I witnessed. Rybka 3 is now a beast and I fear for chess!

How can any human now have a chance? Toga fought well but was beaten hard in the end but what really astonished me was the positional skill that was used to beat him. I didn't know computers could play this way!!

I remember others bragging about Rybka 3 but I just didn't want to believe the hype, I guess I just needed to see it for myself. My friends comp is much stronger than the junk I am stuck with at the moment and so I have never really seen things like this.

Two things were learned I need to get a quad core and I never want to play Rybka 3 on it!!

Don't feel bad, I had to pony-up and get a Quad Computer also. Hell I am now looking at Octals.

I'm in such a bad state, that however much I WISH I had a stronger and up to date computer, I am more than happy that I still have this old sigle core lap-top which is still hanging on. I hope it carries on until I can get something more ideal, though that is far down the list of biggest emergencies.
Still,
what I'm trying to say is that I hope that Rybka 3 will show all of its greatness on my singal-core laptop, when I order that program soon.
I don't see why it shouldn't. It only takes a bit longer to get to the same amount of nodes.
If I would leave it analize on my computer for about 1 hour, it would perhaps be the same node count as a top octal in ten minutes.

Rybka3 even on a single core CPU is still VERY strong. I have used my 1.6 GHz system while watching the Kramnik-Anand match and Rybka3 even on my slow hardware accurately predicts almost all of Anand's strong moves (...Rg4 in game 3; 9. h3 in the Nimzo Indian just played yesterday --just two of a huge number of examples -- those happen to be judged TNs by many GMs it seems).

Will a single core system stand up to quads and octals on Playchess? Heck no (sure a single victory here and there but generally speed kills in chess when it comes to computer chess). Is it very strong and will it be useful in spotting mistakes made by Super GMs? Very frequently it will...

Can you post the Rybka 3 - Toga 1.4.1se match which has impressed you so much and was an eye-opener for you? It would be interesting to see such an impressive game. Please do share, if possible.

But Rybka 3 cannot do bishop underpromotion. That doesn't affect its strength, in fact, it raises its strength because it doesn't waste time to consider the possibility. Yet, it just doesn't seem to be right.

Actually, try this:

Match Rybka 2.3.2a against the strongest opposition you can find, and you'll find out she destroys everything. Rybka 2.3.2a is a beast.

Now try Rybka 3 against Rybka 2.3.2a, and watch 2.3.2a getting destroyed. It's astonishing.

You can see this effect already with free Rybka 2.2n2, it's humiliating.

Reminds me of the battles from Dragon Ball Z in where they depict an incredibly strong fighter and in the next chapter another fighter comes and sweeps the floor with it. Rybka seems unstoppable.

Not only that, but Rybka used to play dull chess, I created topics and raised my frustration that Rybka was playing boring chess at Rybka forum. Not anymore, if you want to see some strong entertaining chess Try Rybka 3 Human, in style it's up there in the league of Toga 3.1.2SE or Hiarcs Paderborn. If you're a lover of Junior, you'll love Rybka 3 Dynamic.

Do you want to really feel frightened? Well, it's expected that Rybka 4 will destroy Rybka 3, and since they hyped a 100 ELO improvement and it turned out like a 120 ELO improvement, I'm sure Rybka 4 will be even more mind-boggling.

But maybe they will cut out some of the positional knowledge of Rybka 3 to give quicker depth on Rybka 4, so you can never get somehing JUST right.
That's my pessimism, my optimism is usually not accurate.
