A Delicious Comeback to Older Times: Playing CC7

Post by fern »

Yesterday I ransacked the most deeper hole of my vault where I keep my collection of chess computers and took out Chess Challenger 7. I bought it some 2 or 3 years ago as a way to remember old times. CC7 was my first model of chess computer, which I think I purchased in 1980. I still remember when, where and how was my very first game against it. Later I got the successor, CC8, and CC7 went to other hands, so I lost it.
The one I got from eBay was in perfect conditions exactly as the one I had so many years ago. But, once I got it, I never though I was going to play it again. I just wanted to have it, that was all.
But , as I said, I took it yesterday and decided to play anyway.... My system is that if I lose a game to program or computer, I punish myself compelling me to play another, weaker contrivance. This time I decided to inflict to me a heavy punishment after a row of defeats to Bright 0.4 A.
But, instead of punishment, what a joy I got!
First, the feeling of being again a guy 31 years old, sitting in the table of the dining room to play my first game, work forgotten, anything forgotten.
Second, those curious kind of eyes blinking to me.
Third, the thrill of being compelled to win to such weak player and so compelled to make good work of any bad or mediocre move. That is always a lesson we must take all the time
Fourth, the fact that even a weak program can play a very good move from time to time or in any case it will not simply give a piece or fall in a mate just like that.
Finally, the feeling that even to CC7 you can lose if you does not take care.
Last, the fact that after all that and if you do not get lazy or lose half your brain, the victory is sure.
I played it at his tournament level and crushed in less than 25 moves, mate, three white pieces against one for the program.
It does not matter: I was a happy man.....

after crushing two times CC7 I feel entitled to take CC8 in the version I have, CC6, same program I think.
IF I win, next one will be Excellence
Then par Excellence.
Then who knows, your gift perhaps, Excalibur Grandmaster.
Oh boy, I have two weeks of joy from now on

a hug
