on-line blitz tourney September

This month's on-line engine blitz tourney will take place on

Saturday September 15, 3pm EST (21:00 CET)

Please don miss the opportunity, as we will test a new version of the ICS, which has some bugs corrected. To connect, use the command

winboard -zp -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal -fcp ENGINE.exe -fd ENGINEFOLDER -autoKibitz

(and add -fUCI for UCI engines). Please connect about 15 min in advance.

Note that this is probably the last time the tourney will be held at this IP address, as I am switching ADSL operator in October to get a faster connection.

I am going to try to join with EXchess today. I did a quick test this morning, and xboard + timeseal seems to work fine, and I sent an account request. One question... when EXchess is playing with autoKibitz, it spits "1." to the screen with each move:

I've seen a similar behavior on ICC. Doesn't seem to affect play, but does make it challenging to participate in conversations as the text you are typing keeps getting disrupted. In winboard there is a dedicated text entry box... anything similar for xboard?

I've had the same issue on OICS - I eventually stopped using autoKibitz.

This is the number of people that received the kibitz. After each kibitz command, the ICS will reply with a messaged "kibitzed to N." or something similar (it depends a bit if you are on ICC or FICS), plus a new prompt. Believe me, it would be a hundred times more challenging if your ICS console would be flooded with the opponent's kibitzing. Which it would, if you had not switched on -autoKibitz. For every 1. you see now, you would then have seen 2 or 3 lines of kibitz output (PVs nowadays are so long the wrap), as the opponent makes as many moves as you do.

XBoard 4.2.7 already had an ICS Input Box, which could be switched on from the menu. In current XBoard, I think it is in the View menu, but a more convenient way to get it is simply start typing when the board has focus. The Input Box then pops up automatically to capture what you type, and will stay up. (This even works in non-ICS modes, except that the Input Box then closes at the first <Enter> you type, and you can use it to type moves, move numbers or, in Edit Position mode, FENs.) The ICS Input Box also keeps input history, and allows you to recall old lines using the arrow keys.

Note that the XBoard development version (master branch in my on-line or the GNU repository) even has dedicated Chat Boxes like WinBoard. So that you can conduct or follow several conversations in parallel, without interference from each other or other ICS chatter. As in WinBoard, you can dedicate a Chat Box to a player, a channel, shouts and whispers, nicely sorting the ICS output you are interested in to where it belongs, and only leaving the noise in the console.
