Unable to install xboard 4.6.2

Post by Michel »

I am trying to install xboard 4.6.2 on centos 6 but get the following error on running

Unable to create font set for -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,-*-*-*-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*.

What should I do?

Unfortunately font issues on Linux are beyond my understanding. The patch to use font-sets rather than fonts was made by Tim Mann personally, to allow internationalization through gettext (which often needs an extended character set not available in a single font, to cover the unicode range).

Perhaps you could try to build with internationalization turned off. Then it uses plain fonts in stead of font sets. If that still gives you an error, you will have to install the font.

Note that the GTK version does away completely with all this font nonsense: I did not port any of the font-related code yet, so it will always use the default font.

That did the job. Thanks.

Unfortunately I would have had no idea how to do that.

You will need to install some additional fonts. On Debian-based systems that should include packages: xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi xfonts-scalable xfonts-cyrillic. I am not sure what the Red Hat/CentOS equivalent is.

See http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewt ... 19&t=51769 for some previous discussion and some additional steps needed to get X to recognize the new fonts.
