Oops, almost missed the announcement.
Not entirely sure if I can join though; depends on whether I need my computer for something else (work related) tonight. I should know in about an hour or so.

On the other hand, I can probably put in the extra effort and run whatever work related stuff I need to run on the cluster rather than my own PC...

how do I tell if it's connected successfully? also, what are the equivalent options for -zp on linux?

If it is connected you will see the ICS welcome screen in the terminal from which you started XBoard. Options of XBoard and WinBoard are the same.
