I am trying to get Linux running on my new Windows 8 laptop, through VirtualBox. In Particular Ubuntu 12.04.02 LTS and VirtualBox 4.2.16.

It seems to install alright from the downloaded amd64 iso image (I have an i3 CPU). But as soon as ithe install completes, and it askes me to reboot the (virtual) machine, I get a Windows popup to inform me that VirtualBox crashed.

Is this usual behavior?

I managed to quite the installer by methods unknown (it was insisting to install Ubunto 12.04.2 next to 12.04.2 every time I restarted the VM, and taking down VirtualBox when I tried to make it do 'something else').

But it might have been a mistake to install Ubuntu 12.04. There does not seem to be a menu to start anything that could be of use. (Like a terminal.) Is this really a no-good-for-anything OS?

It seems you are having a hard time using unity desktop manager. I myself have used ubuntu for a long time, but never got used to unity. I found the xfce desktop much more easy to use, but you can also try kde and many more.
You can take a look here if you want to install a different desktop manager from your current ubuntu installation:

On the other hand, if for example you just prefer t have an ubuntu virtual machine working with ubuntu you can try installing xubuntu. It's just an ubuntu distro but that instead of unity it uses xfce as desktop manager:

Yeah, Unity is *really* hard on the graphics card.

You can try Xubuntu, but for my money, Lubuntu 13.04 (Not 12.04) is very hard to beat. Completely up-to-date repos, and less strain on your graphics card and memory.

I have used VirtualBox + Ubuntu for a while, but have changed to Linux Mint 64-bit MATE desktop (still inside a Windows host VB) for half a year now and it's very good and easy to install. Plus it's compatible with all the Ubuntu package repos.
