In this position I played f5-f4? I don't understand why an engine does not give a bigger penalty for this move for it spoiled the whole game. I would say at least 0.6 Pawns. After f5-f4 Black has no good plan. So value should be at least 0.2 + 0.6 = 0.8. After this move Black can only defend on the queen side and will probably lose sooner or later.

Re: Closed positions
Only if white castles short f5-f4 would be fine or if white king is on king side. Pawn structure plus king position and amount of material left over probably tells enough to assign this penalty.

AFAIK by the move f4, you are "releasing the tension" without concrete reasons.Henk wrote:Only if white castles short f5-f4 would be fine or if white king is on king side. Pawn structure plus king position and amount of material left over probably tells enough to assign this penalty.

Also a better plan would be to create an open file on the side where you have more space. After f4 it is difficult to get a pawn on g4 and white may play h3 to prevent it. In the game I castled short which did not help much either or was probably the next bad move. I also managed to get a knight on g3 after h3 but not much worth.
