With the revolution of neural networks and the incorporation of them into chess engines, I want to give some credit to DeepMind. They took chess to the next level.

+1

Go was supposed to be the game that would hold out because human vision and intuition would trump game tree building for a long time to come, because the branching factor is so large in go. Well they dealt with that nonsense quite thoroughly!

Their work in go and chess is the basis of the current elo level boost in chess.

While NNUE itself came from shogi and had nothing to do with AlphaZero, it is important to remember that the likes of Mark Jordan, DIetrich Kappe, and Sergio Vieri were instrumental in training nets for Stockfish NNUE that showed that NNUE architectures were viable for traditional alpha-beta chess engines, and they only were able to do so because they had two years of experience training nets for Leela which was initially a reimplementation of the AlphaZero algorithm for chess.

And let's not forget our own Matthew Lai whose thesis project led directly to his employment with Google's Deepmind Team.

Ummm...'computer chess'.

Truthfully, these NN's look like really strong GM's over the years who...sacrifice a pawn or move an 'a' or 'h' pawn or take a piece off on what at first seams a weird tangent....using their intuition that these things are going to pay dividend well down the road.

They have all added a lot of Elo to computer chess.
