From a little ultrafast test tourney with 10s +0.2s (64MB, 6ply start pgn, Syzygy 5men for Zahak).
In game 1 Bit-Genie 9.19 could not win with R+N vs. lone King?
Also surprising that the eval went down to 0 at very high depths already
8 moves before the repetition and long before the 50 moves rule?
Thus it seems search time at this tc is not the problem.
Usually Bit-Genie despite not being capable of using tablebases finishes games quite fast.
It looks as if the additional Knight somehow creates a problem in mating.

{Draw by 3-fold repetition}
1/2-1/2[/pgn]
[fen]8/8/7r/1K1k4/4n3/8/8/8 w - - 46 78[/fen]
(first move with sudden zero eval, instead of mate eval)
In the second game, which was limited due to my setting with max moves 200, I have no doubt that
Zahak would have won sooner or later, but the postponing of pawn moves probably until 50 moves
draw has to be avoided, looks very similar to what LC0 had done for a long time.
May be Zahak could be persuaded to move the pawns earlier when material diff is very big!?
(I haven't checked, if HCE is still used at some point, or available anymore at all)
Ofc it is also possible search time is too low at that tc to make quicker/better progress.

Re: Surpising endgame pecularities - Bit-Genie + Zahak
I noticed that Zahak is hovering around depth ten the entire endgame (second game).
This is expected in this case, Zahak just doesn't have time to see progress

As for bit genie, it had a bug probably that is in effect here too. Latest version 9.23 should be better

Re: Surpising endgame pecularities - Bit-Genie + Zahak
Probably this patch (which came slightly after my 9.19 compilation)
https://github.com/Aryan1508/Bit-Genie/pull/208
description:
Code: Select all
Causing engine to occasionally play losing moves while reporting draw, due to fifty-move rule mistakenly being activatedI guess this can be verified by setting up the endgame in question, we will see.
I am just compiling the newest one now, thanks for the hint, Amanj.

Re: Surpising endgame pecularities - Bit-Genie + Zahak
Hi Günther,
yes, can be see in the still running FCP-Tourney-KI.
Bit-Genie (I am using your compile 9.19), made many draw's in won position.
Elo for 9.19 can be around 25 Elo higher without this mistakes.
But all in all ...
Very, very nice work around Bit-Genie!!!
The programmer must be a programming hero.
Thanks to the programmer of Bit-Genie and to Günther for the compile!
Best
Frank
And yes, Zahak is very strong in endgames.
A wonderful development!
Two great engines, nice to have!!
