Hi.

I play chess960 against bots on Lichess.

Most of them are way too strong for me. I do not mind losing, I just do not want to lose every single game.
On the other extreme, there are some very weak engines. To the point that it neither fun nor instructive (for me) to play against them.
There is something missing there: some middle strength engines that also play chess960.

run by David Safranek, 4 cores I think?

please not that most bots are vastly underrated because they mostly play against Stockfish bots,
then humans are misled to think the engines are weak. it's not uncommon to see someone getting 10-0d by a lichess bot
plays FRC as well (but sucks at it, not against humans though)

MiniHuman and leela2200 both play FRC and may be in that Goldilocks range you’re looking for.

Although Inanis is not released yet, I made Lichess account (https://lichess.org/@/InanisBot) since it's a great analysis tool that helps me to find a lot of issues with the engine itself - feel free to challenge and play, supports blitz, rapid, standard and classic time control.

Oh yes, I felt the same way when I was playing standard chess quite a few years ago when lichess bots were in the primitive stage. The whole scenario was dominated by accounts with ultra optimized stockfish in superior hardware, or an engine that just plays by rules.I was disappointed as I was specifically looking for engines rated about 2300 to 2500 in CCRL scale.

Lichess is very convenient compared to playing against the engine on desktop. You get more motivated to play against them on lichess as opposed to playing with them on laptop. I don't know, but it feels that way. Maybe it's the age of mobile and the need for immediate game play on the go, anytime and anywhere.

I certainly hope many engines get listed there eventually. Fast forward to 2022, I am happy to see many engines out there in the rating range that I am looking for. Maybe in future, you will feel the same way about FRC.

I would love to see other chess platforms opening their API's for custom chess engines - I honestly know only about Lichess and FICS where you can do it without relatively big problems. Unless I'm wrong and there are more, then I would be grateful for correction.
