Processor benchmarks

Post by Fritz 0 »

Does anybody know by chance what are comparative chess benchmarks (or speed) of the following processors:

AMD K6-2 450 MHz
Pentium III 1GHz
Athlon 1.2 GHz

I suppose it isn't as simple as 1.2 : 1 : 0.45 ratio, because these processors belong to different generations.

Thanks in advance.

You're in luck. I've kept records going back to 286 days.

This is what I've got which will allow you to derive the answers you want.

All figures refer to the equivalent kn/s of what Rybka 4.1 WOULD be if it could run on that CPU. I calculated this by using cross-generational software as best I could. Figures are obviously approximate.

Pentium III 450MHz = 8.5
K6 III 450 MHz = 9.4
Athlon 600 MHz = 11.3
Pentium III 933MHz (Coppermine) = 17.6

So it basically IS 1.2 : 1 : 0.45 ratio. This seems too straightforward to me, but thanks anyway.

It just means Intel and AMD were close to each other in efficiency for integer work. But clearly in the mid 90s AMD is ahead by about 10%, did you see that?
